Good lighting from sconces with shades at vanity?
Comments (4)Your materials are gorgeous! I don't think you are going to get much lighting out of those 40watt lights. I would look for sconces that can take at least a 100watt equivalent bulb, and put it on a dimmer. I have a bathroom that is 9.5x6.5 and I have 2 sconces at 100watts each over my single vanity and I wouldn't want it less. I have lots of white in the room. If you have dark wood it might suck up some of the light. I like the candle stick shape of the lights, can you find one that is capable of larger wattage? I did a quick search on Hudson Valley site and there were a few that held 60 or 75 watt. They were more of a column though. They were very reserved and could work. Are you having canned light in the valance above the sink? A recent poster has canned light and 2 sconces and reports what sounds like fair lighting in her setup. You can try the lighting forum. There is information that is over there on amount of lighting needed for rooms....See MoreShould I put a ledge or shelf above my vanity?
Comments (6)Thank you all for your comments. Desertsteph, yes, the 2nd photo looks a lot like the layout we will have as far as wall, door and light placement, floating vanity, etc. (but we will have 2 recessed sinks). Mostly I am trying to figure out whether to do that layout with the wood shelf as shown in #2 or the tile ledge from #1, but with the rest like #2. Treasuretheday, I see what you mean about #1 being harmonious because the ledge is the same depth and color as the side cabinets next to the ledge and same color as the ceiling. Would you still like the ledge best if it were added to bath #2 (with the walls coming all the way out on the sides of the vanity and the walls a different color than the tile ledge)? I am considering stopping the mirror at 7' tall and putting 1' of tile that will match the ledge above the mirror to the ceiling -- will that help tie in the ledge better? You have the same concern about #2 that I do -- the feeling that the faucets are under a shelf. I found some really pretty deck mounted faucets to use if I go that way, and I would not want them to be hidden (why I am considering #3, plus less cost). Weedyacres, I hadn't even considered potentially hitting my head when I lean over to brush my teeth. I don't like that the shelf would protrude into my sink space, but otherwise like the look. I have 4' between the vanity and the opposite wall, so I could pull the vanity cabinet forward 3-4" (or just make it deeper for more storage), so that the shelf is behind rather than directly over the faucets. Does anyone think that would be a good idea? Here is another bathroom that has a tiled ledge (taller this time) that is just next to a wall like mine would be, rather than next to cabinets the same depth as the ledge. Does this change any opinions? Comments (1)Great looking fixtures and all look very sleek and modern. I'd be a little concerned about whether the "outdoor" one has a finish that would look as refined as the others and maybe not quite right for the bathroom. I would NEVER choose florescent. But since many of the fixtures you are considering offer different bulbs that should not be a limitation. My only concern about on the mirror mounting would be the quality and material of the bulb cover. If it isn't open at the back. It should be OK, not giving you a sharp glare off the glass. Most of these fixtures can be mounted either horizontal or vertical, so you are not committed to a final lay out either way. I'd order my two favorite incandescent and send one back....See MoreWhich sconces for master vanity?
