Design Dilemma Paint Exterior

Painting a wood stained front door

I want to paint my front door a bright color. It is currently wood stained. It has some beveled glass and there are wood and glass panels on either side of the main door. I would love advice on painting door that have previously been wood stained. I am also wondering if I should paint the door ONLY, or if I should also paint the side panels. Thanks!

I've painted a few stained doors. I cleaned it well, and sanded it smooth, going from 120, 150, and then a 220. wipe clean w/mineral spirits or similar.

now coat it w/an oil based primer. you can roll or brush it on, or use the Zinzzer in a can. once this dries, you must fine sand w/a 220 grit. wipe clean and remove all fine residue.

now paint. use a good quality enamel paint. if this gets any type of weather, you must use a UV type of paint meant for exterior applications.

painted side panels is a personal choice

Beth’s advice, as always, is spot on. Sand, oil prime, sand, good quality topcoat.

I saw Debbie Travis do this once on her original TV series, painting a metal door to match its wood frame. She didn't use a graining tool, just four or five colors of paint and an ordinary brush, with a satin varnish at the end. From what I've seen elsewhere, this is feasible if you're imitating a fine-grained wood, not if you want the effect of, say, oak. The key, she said, is to look closely at some wood you want to match, and identify all the separate colors in it, then apply the paint in those proportions. The colors that there is the least of would be applied with a nearly dry brush.

I hope Brushworks, Paintguy (or other Pro applicators!) chime in here too!!! You'll have to carefully assess the peeling areas. * Is it just the outer finish layers, OR is some actual delamination of wood occuring too? * If you're sure you're gonna PAINT, do a "medium" intensity sanding of everything. You dont' have to get to bare wood. * You DO have to sand to a sound surface though! * Apply a top-notch primer and lightly sand that when dried well. NOW you're finally ready to paint! However....on beautiful old doors...it's almost a shame to paint them!! Are they solid wood, or a cheaper laminate of some type? Faron

Prep The trim, doors and window sashes need to be clean and dull. That's easy to do with Dirtex and #220 sandpaper. Be sure to caulk any gaps between trim and walls, door and window jambs, etc. (Those areas are not usually caulked when stained). Caulk after washing, sanding and primer. Primer. Fresh Start acrylic latex primer. You certainly don't need the inconvenience of alkyd primer. Paint. Aura, in Satin unless you like a higher sheen. A high quality paint brush for both the primer and the paint. For primer, a Purdy XL. You want a stiffer brush for primer. For paint, a Purdy Chinex. Or, your choice of any equivalent brushes.

I used Minwax but I tried to find General finishes which I heard was really good. Neither Home Depot or Lowe’s sold it You apply with a foam brush ( it’s really goopy) but it makes it easy to get in cracks. Then you wipe off with cheese cloth. Get plenty of cheese cloth. I then put poly on after it dried and will do a second coat 24 hours from now.

Ditto to the above advice and IMO the sidelights are part of the door so the same color as the door.
