Know you're addicted to Seed Exchange-s...when...
Comments (80)Love this thread!!! I keep nodding my head at some of the things (yogurt cups all over the place, full of seeds and tiny ripped-off corners of paper for labels, making another flower bed simply cuz' you don't have room for all the seedlings, etc). You know you have a problem when you read this post and say to yourself "I'm not as bad as some of the people here". Then you realize you are worse and were only trying to delude yourself before. LOL. Classic case of addict denial! I have to say, reading the posts here makes me feel a little less guilty about my seed snatchin' and WHERE I have ended up snatchin' from. :-) You feel so pleased when you convert your own father into a fellow seed snatcher! One day he came up to me with a happy/sneaky look on his face and pulled a seedpod (a simple marigold) out of his pocket that he snagged from a store. Next he gives me a tiny NOID sprig of a shrub that he pulled up from in front of some mall in town ;-D Then one day I give him a tin of herbal drops I no longer want and ask him to save the tin. I didn't even have to tell him what I wanted it for- he said it for me "for seeds!" I think I have found my kinfolk here in all of you. Great post! ;-) CMK...See MoreTomato Powder...??? use it when/how??
Comments (19)I'm in Zone 5, right on the edge of Zone 4, and like KatieC I find that a 60 day tomato takes about 80 days here. So much for Early Girl, it's no earlier than my favorite Rutgers or Bonnie Best. No greenhouse, no cold frame, no hoop house. I did use those little wax paper covers one year and found that the ground was so cold that it didn't help to get the tomatoes in the ground earlier anyway. In the summer our humidity hovers in the 90% or more and I'm 40 miles from Lake Michigan, so I have that extra dampness, but I also have the Lake's micro-climate. So, I grow tomatoes by the bushel, from my old favorites to newer hybrids like SunGold to old heirlooms like Taxi and Mortgage Lifter. I tried covering them for the first couple of frosts a couple of times, but that didn't work well either, so I'm stuck with basically a 90 day growing season. I've never tried tomato powder, and I get tomato paste in a tube, but I might have to give it a shot. I make little to no tomato based sauces and I did dehydrate the little cherry tomatoes one year and found them to be way over rated and a lot of trouble. Could the powder be made to last longer if it were frozen? A container of powdered dehydrated tomato would take a lot less freezer room than frozen whole tomatoes... Comments (24)That's a beautiful cake, Tracey! I can't cook when I'm bored because about the only time I get bored is at work, and that's not often, but is usually this time of year and in the heat of the summer. That being said, I can't say if I cook when I'm bored or not, cause I'm not sure if that's what leads me to decide to cook or bake something or not. Frequently, I'll start cleaning the kitchen, I mean, really cleaning the kitchen, then, with it so nice and clean, I get motivated to mess it up again, and out comes the cookbooks, flour, sugar and other ingredients for baking. It never fails. And it never fails to really mess up the kitchen, either, lol! Than I have to start all over again. Is that because I'm bored, or in the mood to be busy? I think more the latter. Comments (18)"The little strip in front of the sink, desertsteph? You're worse than me!!! " yeah - that's pretty bad isn't it? lol! it's a juggling act for sure. if the oven isn't in use, i do use the few inches in front of it to set things (ingredients) or something from the fridge. my DW will be 18" one also! but I figure after all these yrs w/o one and it being just me, it'll be fine - and such a luxury (at first anyway). your kitchen looks super tho - that big counter space! sprout your wings and go for it! USE that space! lol! give me some hope that when i get into my new place I won't contain myself to that little strip in front of the sink! The thought of 2.5' of counter space to work on sounds just incredible to my own ears! If you used that little strip between your sink and stove, that be just like me using the strip in front of the sink! doesn't look any bigger. i think it'd even be more difficult w/ the side of the stove there and being sideways... force yourself - gotta break the old habit!...See MoreOutsidePlaying
