Paint Colour for Kitchen / Family Room combo
Comments (4)HC-173 Edgecomb Gray -- Couldn't even find this on the Main Color Chart (to see where it was nested) but it does come up when you search for it singularly. This is definitely more "beige" than gray -- brown base it seems. I rarely advise on a specific color but I'm studying grays for a project right now. Ideally, if you can locate that color on the Master Color Chart or even back at the store on Paint Chips -- move more toward the TRUE Grays and not near neutrals or brown bases. Alternatively I like you're new choices of white or blue-gray too. I always keep in mind the basic trend of going with "warm colors" or "cool colors". Gray, Blues, Greens are definitely cool and breezy and in-line with your vibe. Maybe don't give up on the gray -- the perfect one may be out there -- lots to choose from....See MoreMy Kitchen Facelift Journey part3
Comments (23)I wish there was more to tell on my progress, and I suppose there is, but it is mainly just boring, frustrating stuff. I am so close I can taste it, though! As some of you might know, according to my Problems with Paint thread, I decided not to use the tile backsplash and accent I purchased for this project and am sticking to my original vision of beadboard paneling to complement my island. The BIG issue is, still, PAINT COLOR! Argh! I have done three samples, now, and none seem right. Actually, BM Gray Owl is the right color, hands down, but it seems way too dark. Today I am going to experiment with mixing in white to make it half-formula and hope that does the trick. My other option is to simply paint the beadboard the same color as the cabinets, but then I think I have too much of that color. I love the look in my favorite inspiration kitchen, but she has a lot of other features that break up that plane of color, like glass-fronted cabs. So, more playing with paint today. Last week our new living room furniture arrived, and our kids asked for our old furniture for their family room. That is not going until this weekend, so the old furniture is hanging out in my dining room. I also have an extra large piece of furniture in the DR because I bought that cabinet for the sideboard but still have the antique buffet that will take the place of the piano in the living room, but the piano is going with the kids, too. In my HEAD I know this situation is all changing in a few days, but in the meantime it feels like I am going backwards in my goal to finish and reduce. Anybody want to come work with me for a week? I am having the most awful time finding help........See MoreBudget Kitchen Facelift: WWYD (Picture heavy)
Comments (21)Wow, thank you all for your thoughtful comments! I'll try to give you better information to work with here without boring you to tears... I should have mentioned that the 10k budget does not include the flooring, which I've already set aside, but has to cover all of the cooking appliances and countertops. I started this journey desperately wanting new countertops since I spend my life cleaning grout to no avail. I hadn't considered doing the appliances first and waiting on the countertops, but will give that some serious thought. I do already have an estimate for Cambria Torquay for $4900,tax and a decent ss sink included. If we do the countertop demo ourselves, and pay in cash, we could shave off an additional $700. I did look into some laminates and corian, but was shocked to discover that they are not significantly less expensive once you factor installation in, so I ruled them out. As for granite...It's the standard in our area, but the lower priced groups just don't sing to me. I've seen beautiful white quartzites, but can't find them anywhere around here and have been told that they are far more expensive, so it comes back to Cambria vs butcherblock. The Cambria would eat up half of the kitchen budget, but if I shopped wisely for the cooking appliances, might be doable. BB from Ikea would not be as durable, but significantly cheaper if I can get somebody to cut it for a reasonable price. EAM44, to the left of the fridge (as you look into the kitchen from the nook/family room) is a bank of 4 cabs about 8 feet tall by 4 feet wide, where I currently store pantry items and small appliances. Attached to that, flanking the nook, is an integrated desk and upper cabs about 6 feet long. Wish I could throw a diagram up here, but I am hopeless in that area. Here is a bad shot that I just took: I Have thought of removing the wall oven and putting it with a speed oven or micro in those perimeter cabs, and then mofifying the cabinet under the cooktop to hold appliances. Of course, this would require a 2 stage reface to restock the funds, but definitely worth consideration. herbflavor, you are right! I never realized how many cabinets this small space has, and how top heavy they make it look. I like your idea of doing two paint colors to break it up a bit. Thinking white on top, and perhaps something like BM edgecomb grey on the bottoms and perimeter/pantry cabs. The backsplash is indeed a bit shortened ~17'. I envision white subway tile for the bs, although we'd have to see what that looks like with the countertop choice. No butcherblock around the sink, even if waterloxed? I do worry that with the mounds of wet dishes I seem to constantly generate, that I will quickly hate bb., but I've read here that people don't seem to have problems. Looking into induction ranges, dan188! beekeperswife, your kitchen is one of my inspiration kitchens, never a bore. Thanks for the painting instructions. I feel confident that I could do it reasonably well. I'll stop rambling now :) Thanks to all....See MoreBlue paint for family room and kitchen
Comments (11)Here's a link to a blue we used in our Family Room/Kitchen. Wythe Blue - HC 143 from Benjamin Moore. We sold this home last Fall.. but I loved the color. It took a while to find the right shade that worked best in all the different corners. Some got more light than others so it was difficult. If you like the blue in your pillows then that's a great place to start. Find a version that matches it. Or just a little deeper or lighter. In fact sometimes I find it works better to not have it match so perfectly. I really like how Sarah of Sarah's House uses different shades of colors in one room. You can always add another pillow with a mix of prints or other accessories to make it all blend nicely. Good luck. Here is a link that might be useful: Florida Home...See MoreB Designs Interior's
