Can I vent my dryer into my basement???
Comments (16)I've been venting my dryer indoors during the winter for six years in two small houses and my folks have been doing the same for about seven years and neither of us have had any problems. Keep in mind that the locations in question have been Calgary, Alberta and Bozeman, Montana and both locations have extremely dry air in the winter. I live alone, so I do laundry infrequently; my parents do laundry considerably more often, but their house is large enough to handle the extra moisture. It's also worth noting that home humidifiers can pump more than a gallon of water per day into large houses in extreme winter climates and the "gallon of water per load" statistic applies to large loads of laundry that have been lightly spun; a fast-spinning front-load machine gets clothes fairly dry, right out of the washer. Since we're talking about saving resources, you *do* have a front-loader, right? ; ) The only time I've had an issue has been when the outside temperature is below -20C (roughly 0F), in which case windows near the dryer can experience considerable condensation. One solution is to vent the air outside for the most of the dryer's cycle, then let the air flow inside once the clothes are fairly dry. To solve the lint issue, attach one leg of a finely woven pair of pantyhose to the inside vent with a tight-fitting elastic band. It looks absurd, but the large area permits air to flow with almost no restriction (much like the folds inside a car's air filter) and does a great job of removing lint. The air is nowhere near hot enough to cause me any concern over lint ignition, but it's still prudent to turn the filter inside out and vacuum it once in a while. In summary, many of the above posts are alarmist nonsense and/or apply to warm, moist climates that would benefit little from this energy saving trick. For those of us with cold, dry winters, a couple small tricks make this a great way to save energy and provide beneficial humidity. (In case someone reading this has somehow missed the disclaimer: This DOES NOT apply to gas dryers!)...See MoreAm I the only one who can't sleep? Hope you don't mind me Venting

And, I'm sure when your kitchen is all done, it will be great simply because it has been a labor of love. It's good to know I am not the only one sleeping terribly. I wake up every day with a terrible headache and neck pain. I also wake up in the middle of the night repeatedly adding up cabinet sizes, trying to make a list of events of what should come next, what goes and doesn't go, if I do this then I have to do that and the infamous DID I MAKE A MISTAKE and what are my options now if I decide to change the layout. I started keeping a pen and paper on the night table to be able to jot down the ideas and make notes. However, one kitty is a pen thief, the other is a paper tearer. So when I get up to find the pen, big doggie has to come over and inquire as to what I am doing but more so to make sure he is not missing out on a food tidbit. Then DH starts in, what's wrong, is everything okay . . . it's so pitiful I have to laugh because I would cry. Now I try to get back into bed and find out that another kitty has stolen my warm spot and I just can't bear to move them so to the couch for me where I wonder, I just left that bed with all of them so how did we fit on there before! At least I'm off the kitchen biz. So much for the couch idea. There is usually the shy rescue cat there who so prefers DH to me. Then if I manage to lay down, it's impossible to get my back comfortable but then I finally fall asleep out of sheer exhaustion and then there is DH waking me, come back to bed, you know the couch is no good for your back. Argh . . just leave me be! This is a daily routine for us. I almost want to quit my day job and get a night job just so I don't have to go to sleep. I am sure also that the massive amounts of junk food I am eating is not helping the situation either. I am actually craving veggies so I don't know what that says about the diet. But in the end I will have a nice enough kitchen that I have built out of a labor of love. I am so looking forward to cooking again for us so hang in there! Christine, thanks for sharing your perspective on things. I must say you must be one strong resilient woman! You go girl....See MorePlease, please don't adjust my vents, etc.
Comments (10)It's been a long time since we had a car without a 'memory'. Good thing or I'd spend a lot of time on up, down, tilt seat, tilt seatback, tilt steering wheel, inflate lumbar support, move exterior mirrors... What I'd like to be able to do is bring the gas and brake pedals closer; I know some cars have that! If I move *me* closer, I'm 'kissing' the steering wheel....See MoreCompact washer/dryer. Comments (14)I believe Speed Queen is called Huebsch or something like that in Canada. I have a SQ dryer and like it a lot, but I don't think it would fit in your space. I think you have to evaluate each brand by product. I understand GE makes a decent refrigerator, but I wouldn't recommend them for laundry equipment: poor build quality and even poorer customer service. I learned this the hard way. Whirlpool makes a fine vented dryer; my last dryer was a whirlpool. It was 11 when it went to live with another family who could make the needed repairs themselves. You probably already know that whirlpool and maytag are the same company: whirlpool. I go for functionality in my appliances. Washer and dryer are different brands and both are appliance white so they sort of "match." Good luck in your search....See More- 4 years agolast modified: 4 years ago
