what do amaryllis shoots look like?
Comments (6)A very easy way to differentiate would be size and shape of the bulbs, amaryllis bulbs are quite large about the size of a big onion and they are true bulbs, gladiolas are much smaller in size and are not true bulbs, they are corms, they are only covered by a couple of layers of a papery cover on top. Also the $$$$$$$$$$$ tells you everything, amaryllis bulbs are quite expensive, cheaper ones cost around 6-8 dollars per bulb and can go up to 20 dollars per bulb. Gladiolas are cheap, you can get 10 corms for about 4 dollars and even expensive ones cost less than 10 dollars per 10 corms....See Morewhat bulb does NOT have long foliage?
Comments (18)Thanks for all the suggestions! I will look all these up. It's funny how with bulbs in catalogs they usually use a flower closeup, you rarely see what the foliage looks like. (Sometimes they show a bed of tulips at a distance.)When you think of how long you have to live with flower-less foliage, I'm surprising that is not considered more often. I thought I had hit paydirt when I ran across hardy Cyclamen. Nice foliage, pink flowers! Wow! Then I noticed that they bloom in late summer...not what I had in mind! The white Muscari botryoides looks promising: no foliage pictured, though. How does the foliage compare to that of regular blue muscari? Something with leaves as small as crocus would work. Anyone familiar with Ornithogalum? That has strap-like leaves, doesn't it? O. umbellatum appeals to me, but I need to see those leaves! Is there a good source beside Van Engelen/Scheepers for minor bulbs?...See MoreWhat does Joe Pye look like in dormancy?
Comments (16)My 'Little Joe' is about 3-4 years old and each spring the new shoots come up several inches away from the previous year's. It seems to be a slow spreader, so it may eventually get beyond it's three foot allotted space. Just warning you. I didn't realize they were so hard (LOL) to dig up or divide. I have a 'Gateway' in my boulevard I want to donate to a plant sale next year. Fortunately it's only 2-3 years old or I might have had to resort to the dreaded "R" thing (Roundup). I had no idea they were that difficult. I had read about the various ironweeds being tough-rooted, but I have only had my (several) joe-pyes a few years. Thanks for the warning, everyone....See Morewhat does a new dahlia look like?
Comments (20)That is great news! Nice job :) FYI- you will probably need to stake AA Dahlias, and it is a bit tricky to do without piercing the tubers. I would plan to get stakes now, about a foot shorter than their mature height. I always put a 1 foot piece of bamboo in the ground when I plant them and they replace it with a larger (3-4')metal stake. I put the bamboo in so I can mark where it is safe to stake later, because I don't like looking at a bunch of tall stakes in the garden with little dahlias. I wait until the dahlias are 2-3 feet tall so they hide the final metal stake. Keriann~...See Morelinnea56 (zone 5b Chicago)
