Phase two - redoing the family room
Comments (55)You could put your set top box anywhere that an HDMI cable could reach to, but longer ones get thicker so you might want to keep the distance down to 12' or so. Running down to the baseboard for a piece of furniture that holds the set top box is the most obvious. I think a floor level hearth could look fine - especially with a tiled fireplace surround. Our situation is a bit different because we have an EPA phase II sealed fireplace with an intake vent below the firebox, but here is how it looks with a floor height hearth: The TV is wall mounted (it can extend, tilt and angle). The components (receiver, STB, BlueRay player are in the cabinet to the left. there is a power outlet behind the TV and HDMI cables go in the wall (from the TV up to the attic space, over and back down to behind the cabinet). The cabinet door for the components has speaker cloth and the remotes work through it. Also, there are Ethernet cables from behind the TV and behind the cabinet to the closet where our switch lives. No visible cables. We also put speaker wire in the walls....See MoreFamily room redo (ready to finally make some decisions)
Comments (75)I have not thoroughly read through the above posts but I wanted to chime in! I am occasionally asked to help friends pull together a room, my advice to them is to keep it simple. I like to keep most items neutral and add pillows, throws and accessorizes for color and personality. For your chair that you are looking at in a blue - consider a accent chair of dark wood with upholstered seat cushions in a beige tone that goes with the lighter tones in your rug. The brown of the wood to bring in the darker brown tone and your sofa. Add some fun pillows not matching. Keep the curtains a simple linen with a nice ORB rod and rings. Bring in your animal print in a throw or pillows. Nice thing with this way of decorating is it will be easy to try different throws and pillows and accessories to pull it all together with out committing to a fully upholstered piece that you may not love. For you ottoman I would use a rectangle one in a cream color using a nice tray and colorful print throw and accessories to pull it all together....See MoreRedoing family room, need help with decor, colors. Comments (9)Really nice room. Looks comfortable and inviting. Good choice w/new sofas. Like the fireplace as is ... but less clutter could improve the look of it. Not sure what the picture is above the piano. If it is a family photograph, reframe it and the family photo on the mantel with the same frames and put both above the piano. Really like your coffee table. One day it will be a valuable antique if you don't booger it up. So, for the coffee table, consider taking the table to a glass company and having a dark gray tinted thick glass top created for it -- no refinish for the table necessary. (Alternately, cover everything but the top and paint the top only -- perhaps black or else the same white as your cabinets.) Do the same for your current end table as you do for the coffee table. If you're going to add a second end table, since matching the existing one would likely prove difficult, consider a totally different look -- perhaps a wood 2-drawer filing cabinet? http://realsolidoak.com/office.html...See MoreHelp!
