Yikes! Big cat encounter
Comments (11)Yep Beelize, My eyes were wide! Since then, it's been nervous out there! Syncal, I wanted to say how sorry I am to hear of your loss. What a horrible thing. I'd have felt frustrated, heartbroken, a host of emotions. Miss Kitty, we're in the Pac NW, about 30 or miles north of Seattle, though in the foothills of the Cascades. We have predators of every variety, but they usually remain aloof and we don't see them much, hence the surprise. The encounter was on Sunday. The following Fri-nite, we lost a bird. That cranked the nerve switch up a notch. One of our best muscovies mind you. We were still working on their permanent structure, but they had been fine all year in their pen. Whatever it was left a real mess. Based on all I've read about predators and their leavings, I couldn't i.d. it. Raccoons go for the head (I imagine becuase it has the bird by the neck) but our muscovy was not decapitated. Possums go for the guts, but ours was not disembowled either. He was on his back and filleted at the breast. What ever it was chowed straight in from that angle, and left the remains. Cougars, I'm told, usually haul away and bury their prey, but not always, so I'm not sure. Coincidence? Outside of a dog attack in broad daylight, it is the only loss we've suffered. Three days later, our neighbor saw the cougar in his driveway when they pulled in. It lingered for awhile as they waited in the car. The Wildlife Fish & Game were contacted again. We haven't seen Freddie Cougar since, so don't know. Maybe he went home. Sad fact is, he may have been homeless altogether. They're being pressed out of most territory thanks to so much development. It's not his fault. But I sure feel silly walking up to it like some cougar whisperer saying "here kitty, kitty". Call me Mr. Magoo. RJ gave me a rifle lesson. Doubtful I'd ever use it, but I shot my first tin can! Am thinking about mounting it on the wall over the mantel. :0>...See MoreAny tips to share re: installing a backsplash for a first timer?
Comments (7)There are some tile pros on the board, so hopefully they'll chime in. In the meantime I have tiled a few areas of my own home and have a few thoughts: It would be worth a trip to your local library to check out books on tiling. There are a lot of not-so-obvious things about it that would be covered in the book -- some that come to mind are the mathematical calculations you'll want to do before starting, where to start, the use of and reasons for using a "beater bar", making cuts for outlets -- the placement of these may factor into your original mathematical calculations. It will also cover issues such as ensuring your tile goes up in a straight line, and the even grouting lines questions will be answered in there, too. To get even grout lines I us spacers, but some tile have them built in, and there are also some techniques to learn about spacers that will be discussed in the books -- the first time I tiled, I actually got part way through the job before I figured out I was using the wrong part of the spacer (I used the handle which was not uniform thickness) to space my tiles and they had to be pulled off and redone. I would also strongly urge you to have your first section be on the very least visible part of your kitchen, there will definitely be a learning curve, and you want the most prominent area to showcase you're best work. I'm assuming your tile is average thickness -- if you're using a heavy tile then I have a few more tips for you -- my last project (also my back spash) was a thick, heavy porcelain tile and I found out (the hard way that there are other techniques for heavy tile that I should have used.... so be aware, the weight matters, too....See MoreYikes I see so many white kitchens! Comments (68)PineBaron I'm with your DW on white or really dark, but I've had the white (although not my first choice at the moment) and gonna go for the really dark. Glad to hear I have a buddy in the process :) Sounds like you have a similar color scheme and other ideas I'm going for. I don't know why it makes me feel good to know that I'm not out in lala land with my ideas. lol omg i just clicked on the link! are you kidding me. that is gorgeous property, view, home! Loveit! the interior, the kitchen is what i envision on a smaller scale. I even have several sizes of that long bar hardware pictured in your kitchen drawing. Love the stacked cabinets . May I ask how tall those cabinets are stacked? such a cool look. Just wondering if there is a rule for stacking sizes? I like it when the bottom one is still somewhat tall then the top more of a square. Not sure if I have the ceiling height, but looks like you will! Living room, bathroom love. wow thanks for sharing all the pics. i'm gonna go read the whole thread and I'll be following you! good luck your blessed to have all that, enjoy! thanks again for sharing :)...See MoreYikes - were just starting to build
Comments (36)I suggest you wait to start building if your circumstances allow a delay. My builder broke ground in December 2019. We were told by some of the showrooms not to make finish selections at that time because they would be changing some of their product lines after the 1st of the year when new products started to become available. Now, showrooms are all closed and I have to pick out tile, countertops, electrical fixtures, etc from online pictures and small samples of product colors that I get in the mail. I thought I was fortunate to have worked out my cabinet designs with the cabinet showroom early in the process, but now their manufacturer has closed down...full stop! My builder has kept the process moving to the best of his ability, but now can’t give me any idea of when settlement will be. That means we have no idea about when to apply for a mortgage because most lenders will only guarantee a rate for 90 days unless you pay a fee to extend this time. Moreover, it’s not a good time to be visiting a building site to make sure everything is being built according to your plans — especially if you are in the age group that needs to be extra careful due to COVID-19. I’m curious about why you would even consider starting in this environment....See MoreThomas Wadden
