We recently completed a big project and added a front porch and enlarged entryway. This leaves us with two separate spaces on the porch. We would like to have a bistro set ( or maybe 2) on left side between the garage door and front door and a bench and swing on the left side. The dilemma comes as to what color. Should both sides match? I like a black metal bistro set and my husband likes white wood furniture. Would that look okay? Or should we go with black furniture for both sets? Any other suggestions on how to furnish/decorate our porch?

I think black will just blend into the background, have you thought about teak or sealed wood? that could match your address sign and tie in. Do you have any overhead lighting under there or a porch light?

If you go with wood you can always paint it later

Great exterior! I agree teak or some other medium-colored wood would look best. I think you could also go for a green swing or bench and modern, black metal furniture. The important thing is that the look of the furniture generally matches.

Thank you Jane. You have a lovely porch too. I love your willow furniture. You are lucky to have trees to shade it. Ours gets morning sun and can get quite warm very early one. One of these days we want to close in our sleeping porch off the master bedroom with storm type windows all around to make it more of a three season porch. We've not used it in years. Used to go out there in the evenings. I used Windows Paint to the above virtuals. I have an original version of PhotoShop that came with one of those pens (by Bamboo) that a friend gave to me since they already had PhotoShop. I think they run around a hundred dollars or so. I've not looked at them for a couple years now. Both Adobe and Corel have free online trials of their photo editors. I've tried them both and liked different things about each one so I never made up my mind which to buy. Now that I have the Adobe from my friend I should ask for the Corel for Christmas from my hubby.

Spray varnish rec for porch furniture

I have used the Krylon spray stain for many outdoor projects. It is so easy to use, one can goes a very long way and will last a couple of years in the elements. Have used it on teak outdoor furniture, small fencing areas, wood bench and swing, some smaller items. It is difficult to find in large HW stores, Ace seems to always have it in stock or order online. Redwood seems to be always there, this is definitely a red hued stain. The finish is very flat, if you want a satin or beyond finish, you will need an additional poly. I tend to like the Krylon stain as it is alone. Any sealant on wood will not take this spray. It likes pure wood (old or new) and will leave voids if any prior finish is left on. You can touch up later on if no poly finish is used.

Having worked in re-upholstery for 20 years, I have seen my fair share of rusted springs and staples and also mold/mildew. Its not the water penetrating through a screened in porch but that you have no control over the humidity levels like you have in your home. The foam will absorb this, theirs no way around this, so its not the fabric the issue here. I would never recommend leather upholstery for a screened in porch. Their are very comfortable furniture, as comfortable as any interior furniture that is made for screened in porches and not intended for any outdoor use. Their is a difference in upholstery made for interiors, screened in porches and outdoors.

DRAW the entire room to scale at 1/4 inch to one inch. Add the windows, openings et. Put inches to all of everything. : ) You don't need a "program". A 25 foot tape measure, graph paper and a pencil and a friend..........works just fine. Get busy or no help of a worthwhile nature will be forthcoming.

I would do a wood bench on the garage side, and maybe a little side table with a lantern or something. An urn for umbrellas? Or stack some firewood there? Don’t block the pathway to the garage door. Two wood chairs with a small table on the other side. Coordinating cushions and a larger doormat. Love the colors, but I’m not in love with the white garage door. Maybe paint it a lighter blue?
