Neon yellow Kitchen
In an attempt to get rid of the outdated beige in my home, I was hoping to brighten up the kitchen by painting the ceiling white and the walls yellow. Clearly, I did not choose the right yellow. we have maple cabinets that are "honey oak" in color and sort of a spanish moss counter, black stainless steel refrigerator. Not sure if I can do a lighter yellow or need to switch to a greyish/blue. Including a pic of our family room that kitchen opens up to. TIA (also- the red needs to go as well)

4 years agoWell, it helps to realize that “honey oak” is really orange. Your yellow is the wrong yellow, and your blue is the wrong blue. Good news is, it’s just paint. Below is an image to give you an idea of how this can work, and here’s a link to a design page for working with honey oak.

4 years agoYou can go with muted blue/gray or muted yellow colors, or with light version of yellow.

'Neon' Pothos not neon
Comments (13)I finally got out my camera and got a picture, hoping to bring some Light to the conversation. ;-) Here's a picture of my Neon Pothos, next to a Golden Pothos for comparison. Although the Neon leaf at the bottom center of the picture is darker than the newest leaf, it still isn't as dark as the Golden Pothos. My Neon is still very young, and we haven't had much sun this winter, so I hope the colors will perk up in the spring. And just to muddy the waters further, isn't there a bright green philodendron? Comments (2)I am of the opinion that is a hilo beauty. Not an alocasia but caladium or xanthosoma depending on the time of year that a botanist gets ahold of it. Seeing as one has not ever bloomed to anyones knowledge. Also it is not uncommon for a plant to throw off a leaf with some variegation. I had a X. lime zinger that had one leaf half white. Comments (1)Removing the popcorn always looks better, IMO. Popcorn or no, I'd strike that zigzag midline evenly, consistently all the way around the room. Do the green on the bottom half. Do the yellow on upper walls AND ceiling to bring some cohesiveness to the architecture, dilute the choppiness of the different sized walls. Keep in mind you'll be repainting eventually so you'll want to keep the edges of the zigzag and anywhere colors meet as flat and as non-globby as possible. Otherwise, you'll have one heck of a prep, sanding project on your hands next time you paint that room....See More

If you were drawn in a way to those colors, what if we try? Do you like a bohemian mix of colors and patterns - people do that!... grey is for black appliances and sofas....

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoThere was a Benjamin Moore color of the year a few years back called "Lemon Sorbet". It's a nice soft, gentle, pale yellow. Or if you wanted something leaning more cream there are a few soft yellow-ivories in their Historical Colors deck.
Actually the Historical Color deck might have a good blue for your fireplace too, either Hale Navy or Van Deusen Blue.
If you were attracted to yellow and blue go with it, but the versions you picked were too high chroma. You need more complex, muted tones, especially if you want the honey cabinets to appear more neutral.
