After scorching hot ..we have cold rain...
Comments (2)Took the garbage out this morning..and sometime last night we had hail.. Nothing was destroyed but there are a lot of holes around. The thick leave plants stood up to it pretty well. the worst part of the whole deal is my best great Expectations could only have been hit from one direction ..and it was. its the most shredded of the bunch. Such a shame. It will probably be fine, but my best plant will move down the list in looks for this year. I think we received 4.5 inchs of rain in the storms yesterday. I hope all of you and your plants WEATHERED the storm better than my great X !...See MoreWe Need Rain In Brooklyn, Its Been Hot & Dry
Comments (18)Hello Everyone, It's been blazing hot down here as well...I started the rain dance but it didn't do much!!! LOL So, I decided to go to Lowes and buy 3 more 5 gallon buckets to keep under the eaves. I have 2 already but I find that I need more with all of this heat. My problem is that my hubby took down all of the gutters several years ago to prevent the wood from roting...This means that during any storm, the rain comes down in strange places. I have figured out where to place the buckets, but I would like to have better control so my neighbors won't freak out everytime we have a storm and watch me run outside to move my buckets around the eaves to collect that good stuff!!! LOL Randy, That sounds like a great idea but the drainage for my air handling units are draining right at ground level and only looks like a few drips per minute. Jim, I like the way you have set up the 35 gallon rubber trash cans..Do you raise the first one up on a table or something first (Then cut a small V) or large V? only to drain into the one slightly (Under/beside). I am curious on how you have yours set up!! Sounds like something I would like to try!!! Could you possibly post a pic or tell me exactly how you set your cans? I would greatly appreciate any help!!! Thank you for your time!!! Laura in VB P.S. My sandals have not left my feet for 3 days now!!! The rubber and my skin are all in one!!! LOL !!! New type of sandals...watch for them on E_Bay!!! LOL!!!...See MoreFertilizing for hot & heavy rain & lowest salt & trace elements
Comments (4)Thank you, Val, excellent info about the dose (2 Tablespoon) .. is your soil sandy/loamy ? Sandy soil leaches out salt easier than clay (retains salt very well). Seaweed from CA (alkaline clay) raises her own-chicken, she dilutes her fresh-poo with water 1st, before applying. Seaweed has 11 inch. of rain, compared to Newberry, Florida of 47.33 of rain. Sulfate of potash has salt-index of 43, at half of salt-index of high-nitrogen chicken manure. I put 1 teaspoon sulfate of potash per small own-root rose. The roses in loamy potting soil (MG-moisture control) .. didn't mind. But the roses in my dense & heavy & sticky clay wilted in hot sun, despite my watering in. For that reason I don't apply fertilizer in clay, unless it's all-night, or all-day rain right after application. When the deer ate all the leaves off my own-root Firefighter rose in June 2013, I spread 1/3 cup of dried-chicken manure NPK 5-3-2 around the bush .. and watered that in .. but we didn't get rain for over 2 weeks in June, and that burnt some of its roots, it didn't survive winter. The late rosarian Karl Bapst, zone 5a, also warned folks about less granular fertilizer in spring since the newly-grown feeder roots is so tiny, thus too much granular fertilizer will burn it. Zone 5a own-roots are so small, with winter below -20 killed all the feeder-roots, and new-growth is very tiny....See MoreRains continue and blooming does too
Comments (17)Thank you, Maryl. I don't know how old Butterscotch is, but .he did not make overtures toward Princess unlike the other males here, So far, he hasn't disappeared for a day or longer either so I assume he is around a year. He does go through the growling ritual with Mr. Stripe. I plan to take him to be neutered this week. Only a very few years ago, I couldn't stand UFs, and never thought I would have them in my garden. Then, I saw Shelby in Dwebra's garden and after having a lovely one, I gradually saw others I liked. They don't always make the cut, but I tend to like different ones thus Holiday Ribbons and a few others. I am glad you enjoyed Holiday Ribbons. It is very easy to get good shots of it since it, like Jellyroll Morton and some others are photogenic and thus are fun to photograph. kay kay...See More- 7 years ago
