Not sure what would go between the yew/Laurel and annuals maybe something like Nandina which does well here, but Im not sure those colors of yellow/red would do well with the house and other colors. On the tiny welcome plot by the walkway, Im thinking just things like daisies and some little grasses, maybe bulbs in the winter/spring and pansies in the winter. Would it be better to have something more substantial but compact like heather or compact laurel? I prefer not to use annuals if I cantoo much work, reallybut I do like the punch of color they bring! The house is smalland if we move the door to the side, people would walk in and have to take a sharp left as theyd "hit" the dining room table. Currently, you walk in the front and have an open path by the table. (I would add that I just knocked down a kitchen wall to open the sight line when you walk in the current door. We closed off the side door to create a galley kitchen insideor we willif any construction person ever calls me back.) Maybe next year I can add lots of flowers (e.g., daisies, purple cone flowersomething that can stand being next to the blacktop but its tricky because then it will grow into the driveway In fact, I wish the fence line were set in a bit more!). Now Im thinking that it might make sense to take off one the far left section of the fence to widen that space so you dont have to zig zag around it to get to the steps. Maybe Id hang a bucket of flowers right thereor something to designate the entrance. 3. Can folks recommend colors for house trim and why certain colors would "work" or not. The blue is sort of happy to me, reallybut is bright, I admit. I thought about something that would match the siding, but I hate the house color, soo Out by the fence in frontIm not sure how I would mulch on the slight slopemaybe try those plastic edging things that hammer into the ground to keep the mulch in its place? 5. Denita, I was just coming back to link some window articles from that website. Really good resource. In addition to great articles on windows, he writes about oft-overlooked aspects of older houses like porch skirts (and now I can't unsee that my house is the only one on the block with its original porch skirt). I'm so glad I'm not the only one proselytizing the virtues of keeping the original windows - sometimes I feel like a crazy Luddite because seemingly everyone else has been caught up by the "energy efficiency" promise of modern windows. But if you think about it, what are you really accomplishing? The new windows typically cost more than what you'll save in energy spending over their limited lifetime, they're made out of petrochemcials and lots of energy is used to manufacture and transport them. I talked to my local wood window guy and asked about doing double panes for the new windows we need for our house (to replace the vinyl ones), and he actually recommended against it - the double pane seal has a shelf life and WILL fail after a couple decades and are way more expensive for them to build than the plain old fashioned single pane windows (which will last a century with regular maintenance), so they won't pay for themselves. Better to do storm panes.

Could you add a couple of photos that show a bit more to the property lines left and right so we can see everything currently in the front yard? I would make the garage doors and all the trim around them the same color. You don’t want to be drawing attention in that area. The area around the front door I would make brighter with color and good lighting. The shrub in the lawn looks a bit unkempt and isn’t placed with any apparent logic relating it to anything else in the yard, so I would likely move or remove it. I would want something a couple of feet tall and rounded in the bed of purple groundcover as well as in a pot between the porch and garage.. The walkway and steps look pinched, so widen the steps and make the walkway wider. Change the placement of the walkway a bit to swing out a bit further from the house if you want to place a plant in the ground rather than a pot between the garage and the porch.

Beautiful place. In the next month, the bulbs and flowering shrubs will be out in full bloom. Ask the sellers what the hedge shrubs are. Perhaps they can be pruned way back to knee height, perhaps they'll just have to be removed completely. Once the shrubs are not in the picture, you'll be able to see the house better. I don't think it needs any structures added in the first year while you get the landscaping back in shape.
