Best way to solve a concealed air penetration problem
Comments (2)I thought about that but had hesitated for a couple of reasons . . . first, the affected part of the chimney runs from about 8 feet to 17 feet above ground, and over the HVAC units, so the access to it is limited and precarious. Not that it couldn't be done, but it's a lot colder and more dangerous than working on the inside. Probably the bigger concern is just not wanting to mess with the "envelope" of the house, even though in this case it's not a very effective envelope :-) I was concerned that pulling out so much caulk and having it exposed might lead to other problems. I'm posting a photo of the space. If I go in from the outside I'd be filling a gap about 8 inches deep, an inch wide (between the stud and the chimney)and the same 9 feet tall. The space marked on the left photo below is what I'd be aiming for if I go through the bookcase. If I go from the outside I'd be in the space to the right of that space. Those are 6" external studs, plus one more turned sideways, so probably about 7 or 8 inches of lumber, a 1" gap, and then the brick chimney. Is Great Stuff reliable for keeping out moisture until the caulk goes over it? Once it's cured I don't think it's water soluble, right?...See MoreDecorating alcoves by the fireplace
Comments (20)In the last picture, TV viewing is not optimal with the couch and love seat at right angles to the TV. I'd also suggest a more colorful rug so as not to drown in a sea of neutrals. The original art on the left wall is hung too high and also does not have enough impact for that large a wall. I'm afraid words and letters are a trend that has had its day, and this room would also really benefit from more color. If you really want your antique to stay where it is, celerygirl's idea of a credenza with art on the other side is a good one. It actually gives the room more interest compared to two identical modern pieces on each side. An Oriental rug would go well with the antique and give the room warmth and character....See MoreNeed help decorating a TV alcove above fireplace
Comments (8)Leave the TV by itself....doesn't need decorating but could you have glass doors put on the left side of the fireplace where your components are? If not that....take measurements and go to a store that sells baskets and find a basket that fits each shelf and put your components and discs and other miscellanious things in the baskets....See MoreWhat should i do in this alcove above fireplace?
Comments (8)HA, the dreaded alcove. Well, yours isn't as bad as most. Usually I recommend drywall over the niche. Take the 3 jars and move them in away from the alcove border so they're almost touching the painting. You should go ahead and get a floating frame for the painting. It will look more finished. Try a black frame. Right now the painting disappears into the background. A frame is what you need. Then you hang the painting about 4 inches from the mantel. This is a black floating frame. Very simple and modern. ....See Morebranson4020
