Comments (15)It's a common misconception that sinks in corners are frowned on here...they're discussed and pros/cons are listed so people can make informed decisions, but not frowned on. Ditto for corner ranges/cooktops. I'm not sure where that rumor started.... For a main or only sink, it might be something to think carefully about b/f committing to, but for a prep sink it's fine. As a matter of fact, I have a corner prep sink. Actually, my kitchen is similar to the first one RHome410 posted and it works wonderfully well...protects the Prep & Cooking Zones from traffic as well as separates them from the Cleanup Zone. I had sixteen 13-year old girls working in my kitchen twice....and it worked wonderfully well! Everyone was amazed! I so love working in my kitchen b/c it's so functional...it's my absolute favorite room in the house! What is different, though, is that my Refrigerator is directly across from the peninsula so there's no running around it to get to it and I do not have seating on the base of the "U", just on the side of the peninsula. I think these two differences may be key. One thing...be careful of having seating too close to the gas fireplace. You should have 3 or 4 feet b/w the seats when someone is sitting in them and the fireplace...even if it's enclosed b/c of heat build-up. Here's my kitchen. Here are the plans for each "wall" Cooktop wall: Sink wall (the sink is actually at counter level, not raised):...See MoreHelp! 911! Busy corner lot landscape ideas for L.A. craftsman home!
Comments (34)The shrub/hedge is a ficus. The trees on the side came with the house. I am not sure what it is but blooms pink large flower. I agree, the fence is nice. The hedge is to cut out noise and to create more privacy in the back there is an apartment sitting up on a hill behind the house that looks into the yard. A 9 foot hedge would give us the privacy. We thought about trees inside the yard but that would take away space from an already small yard. The front flat yard is small. I am attaching the size. Flat land on left is approx 24' wide x 15' and right side is 16' by 15'. The left is actually larger. The lop is a aprox 30 degree 5'9" I am definitely going to hit Pasadena area. My neighborhood is mixed with landscape styles. It's a neighborhood that is changing. The new kids are doing the complete drought thing and some mixing covers, and grass with drought. The older homes have low fences/gates around the front yard (predominantly to keep the homeless from sleeping on their yards) We were one of the first to take off our front door security gate, and now, others are following. So it is hard to gauge the neighborhoods theme. I would say, 10% of the houses are fully drought resistant(new kids), 75 % grass and tree (50% with gates) and the rest of the folks have dead grass (could be considered drought tolerant (GRIN) or total hard-scape. I have to admit, I dig some of doug's designs. I am not a fan of the palm trees but that design is appealing...See Moregrid windows and plantation shutters too busy?
Comments (26)I just found this thread and I'm in the same situation. Britepam1- did you finish your window project? Do you have an "after" photo? I also have a ranch style house, built in 1973. It has 2 big bow windows in front, which I hate. However, as I can't take them out, I have to live with them. We are in the process of starting to replace the original *ugly* windows. I love the look of the grids, but we have plantation shutters. Our consultant said grids with shutters would look too busy. I really want grids, but I'm having a hard time visualizing the bow windows with grids AND plantation shutters, from the outside. I looked online and can't seem to find an example that looks like my house. I want to update the house from the 1970s look and make it more cottage-y, or even more Arts/Crafts style (if that's possible with a ranch house). Any input? Thanks....See MoreCurb appeal help needed for my overly busy 1950's bungalow.
Comments (22)We use the front door as an entry, it has a couple planets on it, I rant to decorate it a little bit more with a little bistro set maybe! I am looking for more budget friendly fixes currently since we are hoping for an addition on the back at some point and my husband does not want to put too much into the front, so if i can think of a good fix that's affordable then it's manageable! He is also amazing at diy and reno projects and my brother is a contractor so that helps!...See MoreJennifer Wilson
