Paint Home Repair Exterior

vinyl or other siding advice needed

I have a center hall colonial built in the 60's. Shingled. I am considering have all but the front sided due to the constant peeling of paint. Will siding three side help with my maintenance issues? Do people take this course of action? I believe latex was put over old oil paint that wasn't properly prepared. Every year parts of the exterior peels...and every year needs parts repainted. Even the garage wall that isn't insulated! Any advice will be appreciated.

siding needs to be properly prepped for the paint to stick, should not be peeling every year.

oh, the concept of properly prepping is understood; however, latex over previously improperly prepped oil paint has resulted in disaster. Either all paint is now to be stripped, or we install vinyl siding. My question was related to siding only 3 sides of the house. I've called around, and apparently that is done all the time. I want to vinyl (or some such material) side the back and the sides and leave the front wood. I just cannot be painting the entire house every few years. Thanks for your input.

I had redwood, and I was getting to old to be scraping and repainting. I went with a wide hardiplank. I would do that before I ever considered vinyl. Oh, and that was 10+ years ago. I doubt we will ever paint it again. There are similar homes in a nearby neighborhood that are your style home. These home owners have painted the siding grey or taupe colors, leaving the trim work white. Those homes look refreshed, and up-to-date. Your home would be a perfect candidate for that. Hardisiding comes in shakes, and you could add those for visual interest (my neighbors have that and their house looks great)

Are you guys referring to the exterior window trim having some sort of wood or insulation under it in order for the window casing to stick out more than the siding? we have wood siding which we plan on keeping. We aren thinking of using pvc trim amd having it painted. Can we install pvc exterior trim without a new construction installation?

Dark (black or really dark gray) for the fascia and chimney and any shutters you add on the right front; same color as the sun porch for the rest. You should have room for a 6' deck by the sunporch. You might consider moving all those shrubs adjacent to the house to the edge of your lot and let them grow as a privacy hedge. then you could begin your front yard landscaping with a blank slate.

Ok but it's just a suggestion. It's not well thought out yet so hire a professional for help I'm thinking that the 'tower' needs to be reduced in height, so maybe by extending the roof and gutter line you can help with that visual. Also I have extended the porch to the edge of the house and extended the porch roof line. BTW I find the porch that extends so far to the left isn't really working. The deck should go out from the building IMO and should have a more graceful way of meeting the ground than those steps with the railing especially since there is a slope. This is a bad example but at least the deck projects out from the house. Stairs are too big and useless but it's more the size you should consider.

this old house did an episode on the problems of latex over oil on a rather old house....and the resulting issues due to cracks in the oil paint and expansion.

DH was going to paint our old garage, but then he priced paint and priced siding. Decided on the siding, smart move, no maintenance! Prices were pretty comparable.

My mothers house has had Latex over Oil for years. The painters always grind the paint off, and then prime it., and then a couple coats of paint. I have vinyl on my house, would much rather have a solid surface (hardi) as you can see the undulations.
