Comments (9)Here's a picture of some buds I clipped this morning. Other bushes which have stopped blooming look sick. For 40 years my bushes have been mostly trouble-free, only sprayed a few times. Barely had any aphids or mildew this spring. And now this. it's very disturbing. Aren't these just UGLY??? I got a spray bottle of spinosad, clipped a bush down to just sticks and sprayed it. I clipped it because recently when in The Huntington neighborhood I noticed all their small roses at the entry gate were clipped down very short, 8"-ish. Maybe they clipped them and then sprayed. I have about 30 bushes and cannot do all with a little spray bottle. My hand was cramped doing the one bush. Maybe I'll get someone to come do it. I don't like to spray myself....See Morethrip infested myroporum carsoni..help, please
Comments (4)Thanks for your reply, brandon. I am so tired of these awful looking mistake plantings. I was trying to cut to the chase re. details. I did the research and husband did the fix attempts. My research told me they are probably "chili thrips". They are reddish brown and almost microscopic. It was said that it was a bad time for these pests ( 2 yrs ago), and they'd be extremely difficult to remove. Oh yeah! Believe he used Spinosad as well as a systemic. We were loath to use these for fear of harming any potential friendly bugs, but had become desperate. The treatments were to be applied at specific a time, which he did. This recommended regime was faithfully adhered to two seasons in a row. I have now given up on a treatment. Thank you for the site which is partially quoted below, and hence my prune off all the leaves theory : "Prune and destroy injured and infested terminals when managing a few ****small specimen plants in the landscape. Regular pruning of infested parts can be especially effective with the gall-making Cuban laurel thrips. Avoid shearing plants. Shearing, which is clipping dense foliage to maintain an even surface on formal hedges, stimulates susceptible new growth. Prune by cutting plants just above branch crotches and nodes instead of shearing off terminals....." ***10-12 ft. trees are likely not "small specimen plants", but I am at a loss of what to attempt before simply chopping them down. Hope you or someone has an idea. Thanks so much!...See MoreCan someone explain camote leaves, please?
Comments (5)"Do some varieties of sweet potatoes have better tasting leaves than others?" Absolutely. The kamote that I grew when I lived in San Diego was really great for greens. Not so great for tubers, though, since they wandered up to 3 feet away from the plant in all directions. (!!!) I tried some of the ornamental sweet potatoes several years ago. The leaves had a strong, almost chemical flavor - very unpleasant. If you have an Asian store near you that sells the shoots, it might be the best way to avoid disappointment. Cut the leaves from the stems, place the stems in water, and cook the leaves. If you like them, allow the stems to root (they do so very quickly) and set them out when the weather warms. I do this for the variety that I grow now; it is not the same as what I grew in San Diego, but still good....See MoreThrips as a first timer.
Comments (4)Spray. Use it on all above the ground part of the plants. Thrips feed on young leaves as well. It should have a dose on the label. Add a drop or 3 of dishwashing soap for better attachment. - Ivory, Down - something like this. You do not need to rinse the plant. Keep the fishtanks closed if you have fish. It is low grade danger for humans and pets - but fish is more vulnerable. It helps against foliar mealy bugs and fungus gnats if you spray the soil. If you have root mealy bugs - you need to use dry imidacloprid - Marathon or cheaper brands. It doesn't help against mites. You think you have all bugs in the world - but it is probably not the case. Fungus gnats and thrips - is usually what you bring with your plants from the store. Pretty much every time. Good Luck Irina...See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
