Did you ever have a 'friend' who wouldn't go away?
Comments (19)I'm going through that right now. She's a neighbor which makes it worse. This woman calls me every day on the phone expecting to chat for an hour or two or three. My handset has a speaker so I just let her talk away while I clean the house. Nothing I hate more than a person who talks AT me instead of TO me. Have you met people like that? You start to appreciate there is an art to conversation when you meet people who don't understand that it should be TWO WAY! She talks, I listen. I have no sympathy for her problems because she's so self-serving. Has no interest in my life. Day after day she calls mostly to repeat what she said the day before. She lives alone. Talking on the phone is her favorite pasttime whereas when I'm bored I turn on the TV or get on the internet. When I tried to ween her off of me by not answering the phone she started calling at odd hours like 10pm or 9am in an effort to catch me. She would even show up at my door if I didn't answer the phone after a couple days. I can't not ever answer her calls or she'll think I've died or something so now I "return her phonecall" with an email. She hates email because she can't monopolize the conversation and you're in control. That's what I recommend you try. Don't answer her phone call, instead reply by email so you're still being polite. With a properly scripted email you can impart a message without being overtly rude. Doesn't require brutal honesty. The shorter the response the quicker she'll realize you aren't interested in her. If I'm not home when my neighbor calls she'll have a conversation with MY ANSWERING MACHINE! She doesn't just leave a message she will talk until the machine cuts her off. DH laughs that even the machine can't listen to her for very long. She's the only person who has ever run the time out on my machine. A couple of times she's run the battery down on my handset because she's talked so long. I thought we had been disconnected but a slow walk to the other end of my house to pick up another receiver revealed that we hadn't. I just wanted to call her back to explain I didn't hang up on her when I realized we hadn't been disconnected. She was still talking! Completely unaware that there was no one on the other end. Didn't matter a bit to her. LOL The problem comes when people are too dense to pick up on "social queues". Those are the ones we all loathe because they force you to act in a way you'd rather not ...rude, curt, or the bearer or the silent treatment. But when polite hints fail you do what you gotta do!...See MoreDuring your renovation did you ever.....
Comments (11)Oh, yes! I feel like screaming, crying, etc. Sometimes I look around and start shaking because I don't know where to start in order to clean up some of the continual mess. I teach fitness classes every morning and have been at this particular place for over 10 years. I recently got a second class at a new place just on Fridays after my regular job. So, last Thurs, Lowe's called to tell me my pantry door was ready. I was so excited!! Friday morning, I take off for my regular class in the old pick-up truck. I stop and get two bales of hay and then to Lowe's to pick up my door. When I got home, my husband said, "Are you just going to take the car now?" I didn't know what he was talking about. He said, "To your second class!" All of a sudden I got queasy and my heart started racing. I had completely forgotten about the second class!! So I braced myself for the phone call I had to make and my boss wasn't even at the gym. She didn't even know I hadn't shown up yet. She was very understanding and told me not to beat myself up for it (which I did anyway). However, I would have to fill out a psych form that would go in my file in case it ever happens again!! WHAT?!? Talk about embarrassing! In 23 years, I only forgot about one class that someone asked me to sub about two months in advance. My DH and kids thought I was teasing them and that the class had actually been canceled. THIS is what this remodel has done to me. Although, it could also be the menopause!! We couldn't have hired out this project, that wouldn't have gone with our budget, so I know that IF it was going to get done, this is how- but it's not been pretty. Same here! I CANT BELIEVE I CHOSE THIS PATTERN! IT'S AWFULL!! Now that's funny!...See MoreHave you ever ........?
Comments (16)Do you remember the historical fiction books by Edward Rutherford? Usually he takes as his starting point a town or city and from the dim mists of the past builds up a story of two or three families and traces then down to the modern day. I have enjoyed a couple of them but found as we got towards now he (and I) ran out of steam, or maybe it was just because they are SO long . . . and heavy . . . and my arms ached too much so I couldn't go on. I think Sarum is the one I enjoyed the most telling the 'tale' of the old town on a hill that ran out of water and was rebuilt on flat land as Salisbury, known for its famous cathedral and the recent horrible poisonings by Russian agents. The one I was least inspired by was The Forest set in the New Forest in S England and scene of a murder . . . it was set-up by the Normans as a Royal Hunting Forest with savage laws against the unfortunate peasants who lived within its confines. I feel Rutherford lost his way through the trees here as his 'families' had lives of little interest . . . being a peasant back then couldn't have led to fun-filled days and great adventures. Just staying alive was hard work....See MoreBest way to renovate a 1920's build to maximize space and utility?
Comments (1)The existing has odd proportioned rooms, quirks, and sub-optimal circulation and adjacencies. Your 2 proposed plans have odd proportioned rooms, quirks, and sub-optimal circulation and adjacencies. So it doesn't seem you would move the needle much after so much work and money spent. This house appears to be too complex to communicate with only a diagrammatic floor plan, and too much information missing to really help in a constructive way. Unknowns about bearing walls, 2nd floor footprint, exterior elevations, living patterns, etc. The best scenario for this particular project seems to be had with an on-site architect who can do a proper as-built and go through your budget and programming points. I would also recommend that if you have not lived there long to have patience to gain an understanding of the house and how you live with it prior to blowing it apart....See MoreNewEnglandgal
