Black Coral snake plant-over or underwatering?

I bought this plant maybe eight years ago, and it's grown a LOT. Lately it has been drooping. I don't know if I've under or overwatered it! I've grown sans successfully for many years, but this has me perplexed. I took it out of it's pot and the middle was moist, but the outside dry. The roots were few, and looked an orangish-tan color, but DRY and firm. Not mushy. I noticed today it had a baby coming up, so I cut the baby out and put it in it's own pot. It's only 2 inches high. I hope I didn't do this prematurely. Here is a pic of the mother plant and the baby, potted up. What do you think? It's been in a north window--maybe not enough light, and not a watering issue? I admit it's been watered haphazardly lately. But I make sure it's dry, and have never kept it moist. Will the baby live?
