Wanted: tips for building with physical disabilities in mind
Comments (12)I agree with all that has been said. We are building our home for the future as well. We installed an elevator - I think it's number one on our list for access to and from the second floor. when you add a backer, or support for your grab bars, my DH put in 1 1/8" plywood between some studs as well. this will allow you to change the height of the grab bars, without ripping up the wall to find the support, not all are created equal, some people over time will find a lower or slanted or vertical handle bar better than the standard horizontal. I would recommend some radiant heating. Older people tend to have poorer circulation in their legs, etc. Not to mention all of the other great things radiant heating does. Door levers vice handles, bin pulls vice small knobs Lighting/video/audio access bedside, this includes phones, internet, etc. I have a swing lamp just to the side of the master headboard for ease in turning on and off the light. phone hardwired in bathroom (safety) roll in showers, no lip, no shower pan, wide easy access into and out of the bathroom, toilet area and shower. Single level access throughout home, or back to the elevator, single level access into and out of home, or look at ramps, etc. If you get an elevator, size it correctly, so that a fairly large person with their leg extenders can easily manipulate themselves in and out of the elevator (we practiced this with a good friend of ours and sized our elevator to his size and needs) Bathroom vanity pulls out in the center for someone in a wheelchair, and rolls back in when not needed If I think of more, I'll post again, hope this is what you were looking for....See MoreNeed to find a scooter for $800 or less.
Comments (4)Look at classified ads and cruise the motorcycle shops. Scooters and motorcycles are at their low point in sales in winter in the northern tier of states. Right now, there may be some Christmas sales, so wait 'til Janurary and then go bargain hunting. Prices are the lowest. One caveat, however, many owners knowing this do not attempt to sell or spend money for ads, but wait for spring when sales pick up. I have found that you can find a bargain in late August when riders are about to go away to school and the end of the riding season is approaching....See MoreTips on storing multiple bicycles, scooters, etc?
Comments (7)The other possibility is, if you can use a saw and hammer, etc., is to make a set of slots out of 2x4s and plywood. Sort of like very narrow cubbies, but maybe w/ an open top. Scooters can fold up, though of course it would be best if you didn't have to. one bike rack (flat on the ground) http://www.canadianhomeworkshop.com/weekend/bikerack.shtml a bunch of plans, click on the "bike rack" link; you could maybe add some plywood panels about 6 inches apart to slip the scooters between. THIS ONE looks promising. Maybe you could slip a scooter into the same exact slots. Here's a pic of a commercial scooter rack; maybe it would give you ideas about what sort of "slots" you'd need to add on a bike rack? http://www.ufpi.com/literature/bikerack-62.pdf Here is a link that might be useful: commercial scooter stand, you could bolt several to a piece of plywood...See MoreKick off 2015 with a GTKY
Comments (65)1. Did you make any New Years Resolutions? If so, have you managed to keep it/them so far? I actually didn't make one, but I feel unorganized lately. I want to make the best use of all my time so back to making lists for me. 2. What are you wearing? blazer, stripe shirt, floral scarf, jeans, and ...furry boot slippers. Will put boots on later. 3. Hows the weather in your neck of the woods? Snow. 4. What did you eat today? Banana. I need to eat after this. (Back to making lists for my food too!) 5. Do you celebrate Valentines day? How? Sure. I find in more recent years it seems so commercial to me that I feel almost silly to participate in the festivities. We'll probably go out for dinner though! 6. If married, how long have you been married? 7 years. 7. What is your favorite feature? eyelashes 8. What is the predominant color in your wardrobe? Black 9. What is your favorite board or card game? If you work outside the home, how far/long is your daily commute? Used to be almost an hour. 13. Where was the last place you travelled to that was greater than 300 miles from your home? Beach 14. I like sports, but don't want to watch them on tv. I think games last WAY too long. Hours and hours and then there's another game! I don't want to sit that long....See MoreUser
