New exterior lights too big for mounting block

Hi
One of our front porch lights was broken, so I purchased some new LED lights at Costco. They almost identically match the side light that the previous owners replaced some time ago. The problem is the mounting block space it too small. It is recessed into the siding (see photo), and the back of the light is about an inch too long to fit in this space.
Is there a way to make these new lights work without having to tear out the siding to replace the mounting block? I was thinking maybe a piece of wood cut to fit inside the mounting space, with the center cut out of course, to raise it up to be flush for the light to sit on? And of course longer mounting screws would be needed I think.
I appreciate any and all help! Mar
