Front door ideas needed

I’m looking for cost effective ways to make the front of my house flow better. The entry is bothering me a lot. The door is an old wood one that’s been painted black. The stoop is super dirty all the time. I got the pediment and white casing installed but what else can I do here? I don’t have a porch per se. How can I create a porch or make this look nicer?

I don't see any way to create a porch, but the front curb appeal needs major LANDSCAPING. The landscaping should be in layers to make the front less flat and more interesting.

Also IMO the black shutters only contribute to the harsh appearance of the house & I would repaint in a dark charcoal gray pulled from your brick colors.

1) paint the downspout to blend into the brick

2) get some landscaping, preferably extending the beds farther from the house and maybe down the walk. you might also consider planters on either side of the pediments to help make the entry more welcoming.

3) can't see the stoop in photos at all

4) paint the door a brighter color to help it emerge from its cave.

Window boxes with colorful flowers and trailing vines are always a nice boost.

One suggestion would be a trio of wreaths for your door. The two planters/urns in your first photo look nice. You could add some lights to them. Maybe lights on the two trees flanking the entry. Those battery-powered fairy lights come in handy for wreaths, planters and just about anything else. They're on very flexible thin wire and easy to weave, spiral or arrange any way you like.

Your visitors need to be guided to your front door. Take out the overgrown shrubs and, as has been suggested here, re think the sidewalk to your front door. This can be done by widening both the bed in front of your house AND installing a wide sidewalk (modern paving stones) to the right side of your home. With planting beds on the street side of the pathway. You might consider low level lighting, too, to guide your guests to the right door. As has been suggested…placing your house numbers in a more obvious place, making them larger, and lighting them will help people see where they should enter. Have you ever considered creating a gate across the front of your carport? One that could be opened (or even have a small gate for family access) so that people see that area as “private?” Just a thought. Note: Installing a sidewalk to the street in front of your home, as some have suggested, only works IF your neighborhood has sidewalks. Many neighborhoods do not have them.

^Yes, as acm mentioned, paint the downspout. It was the first thing I noticed. Can't see your door at all. Something that has glass panels to mimic your windows would be nice...such as a 6-lite similar in style (not color) to this.

I'd paint the trim around the door a black, to match the shutters and then I would paint the front door a different color; a sunny yellow, teal, or aqua, maybe even a nice red.

From what I can csee, the house is neutral enough that a rich tone of most colors will work. I like a teal/peacock blue. a lighter blue also works. Red is nice. If you want to strip the paint off, you could satin the door a mahogany color.

Widen the walkway to at least 4’ and add a large landing in front of the door. Right now the whole approach looks pinched.

Then start thinking about landscaping.

the pilasters look a little skimpy to me. take a look at these examples and see if you could redo it like this

Also notice how they did the landscaping on this one. you need something curvy like like this on yours to break up all of the sharp edges of your home.

I love this white brick, above. it sets off the black shutters beautifully. Romabio is a natural lime wash that will not cause extra maintenance to the brick.

Omg wow!!! I love these ideas y’all!!! Thank you for giving me so much to work with! I totally agree with the “flat” feel the house has and the need to break it up. I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was but that’s basically it. I also had no idea Romabio was a thing!!! Thank you a million times over!

see about redoing your pilasters and pediment in a style like this, or at least this size. and if you can enlarge your door opening (at least one side lite) it would look better.

you what's cool about this? if you don't like it, wash it off within the first 72 hours and you're back to your old brick! Makes sampling one side very easy.

I think this look w/your black shutters, a bold color door, fresh new landscaping, would look amazing on your home.

The undersized pediment and casing were the first things I noticed. Then the white downspouts jumped out at me. If you do Romabio, you may want to consider a new color for the windows and facia.

I think I’m in love with the Romabio. It’s just beautiful. We did sealer on the brick when we first moved in to sort of freshen up the brick since it looked so dry and crumbly. It helped a little bit but not the way we were hoping. I wish I had known about this. The pediment and casing idea is gold. I also will note to change the color of the downspout. I can’t wait to get started on this!!! Thank you!
