HELP - repotting Schefflera arboricola 'Variegata'
Comments (12)Sorry hadda run off like that.....Moby was playing (don't know if you know him, but has sentimental value.... : ) As far as falling off a truck, I doubt it. It's in a pot like anyone would repot a plant in. Has one of those 'connected' bottoms so water sits in it unless you tip it sideways. Friend said it just looked like someone just threw it out in front of their house and I can't imagine why no one grabbed it up before him. Maybe like an eviction situation? I never really got details. Just know I know plants and this poor guy had been laying out there for at least a month. That's how HARD he'd tried to grow upright. He was downright 90º angled up to the sun from his pot. Friend did good taking care of him, getting him growing right, except for turning after he'd righted himself. Like I said, we were of two minds on that one. Friend grew up on a farm so I imagine he was used to only natural growth. I tried to teach him about consistently rotating plants, but to no avail. Probably why this guy STILL looks so funky. But that's part of his charm. I will definitely try to take pics outdoors tomorrow. We're calling for low 50's, which is really GREAT for our time of year (VA east coast, near Va. Beach). I see we're on opposite coasts. But I know our weather is MUCH different. In fact, if you don't mind me asking a non-plant related question.....why is it when I watch TV shows filmed on the CA coast that one person has on a sweater and long pants yet another has on a tank top and shorts? I mean, we have strange weather here where one day you wear shorts and flip-flops and the next you need a sweatshirt. But (and I know it's TV) from what I can see, people in your area have all kinds of different clothing on all on the same day??? Plus, I see shows with real estate with the homes with no screens in the windows? Don't you have bugs? We have nasty mosquitoes, being so close to swamp lands and wet lands (which I guess you don't have??) If this is too "off topic" feel free to email me in detail. This has been a question I have been wanting to ask for soooo long now and never knew where to ask it. Didn't want to Google.....ha ha ha. Comments (15)My sis lost her dh of 32 years this fall so I'm trying to cheer her up with some flowers. She's also physically handicapped, which means I have to do some things which need as little upkeep as possible. She loves hummingbirds and has an area I can plant which she can enjoy from inside. So, I'm looking at cardinal vine to grow up her front porch. My hummers love it. She also loves wildflowers and has a lot of them along the bank of the stream which goes thru her yard. I'm going to see what I can add to that for her. That will probably be my biggest project. This fall I already planted daffs near her back steps so she can enjoy a little color when she does get out this spring. Nothing like those first spring splashes of color to brighten your day and daffs are always cheerful. She's in the mtns so I have to gear my thinking in a different direction from my normal zone pushing tropicals around here. WooHoo! I'm a Great Aunt! Looking for some good shade plants that need minimal care for the new Mom. She loves gardening but her time will be very limited this year. I told her I'd help with some suggestions, after I do some reading. For me, I need to finish a lot of projects this year, like the tropical bed (finish the wall), the ginger bed (wall) and my front yard bed (edging and a path). Would like to add to the side bed and make it high enough to sit on while working in it. I'll be doing more Gingers, Elephant Ears and Brugs! Throw the water and fertilizer to them and they're real happy!...See Moreupdate: july mnf swap: letting freedom ring (part 3!)
Comments (145)My box arrived today. Hubby took it down the basement until I got home and things were nice and cool when I opened it. Darrin packed his box FULL. I couldn't believe how much he was able to put into that box. Amazing!! Keep in mind he went with a patriotic theme beginning with a nice note that included a poem he wrote. Job well done too. centranthus alba Iris (All night long?) rain lilies ranunculus anemone orange trumpet vine, (I have always wanted one of these and although I discovered one along the side of the ditch this year, I want one by the house.) Gladiolas, red and yellow Horseradish, can't wait to read up on this and get it growing. Along with the plants was Bag of tootsie rolls Hand sanitizer Strawberry marshmallow cream lip balm 2 notepads with flowers on the front notepad with a bluebird on the front, (I use a lot of notepads) 2 packages of Jobes fertilizer spikes, one for flowers and one for vegies Patriotic cushie for my cans two small keychain flashlights, handy!! Seed baggies Lady bug magnets a two pack of lipbalm Blue dolphin windchime Pocket phillips screwdriver, (keeping this away from hubby) Squirrel pot hugger, cute Plant markers AND a crocheted patriotic butterfly pin, (I am sure this is another one of Elly's creations. Be sure to tell her thanks for me Darrin) Thanks for the wonderful, wonderful box. I am going to keep it all wet and get it in the ground on the weekend. The temperature is supposed to reach 102 tomorrow so there is no way I am planting these lovely things now just for them to cook out there. Dan, I had one of the best times in this swap. Thanks again for hosting it. You did a super job. Margo...See MoreWashing Lines Banned????? - Brit in Shock!!!!!!
Comments (25)lulundave - I don't pin shirts on a line (EVER), I hang them either on the wooden hangers I hang all our clothing on (and they go straight from the line to the closet when dry) or TIDE hangers (specially made for air-drying shirts/sweaters and pants - I love these things!). The TIDE hangers are large plastic hangers with vents for air ciruclation. They have wide shoulder areas so you don't get "bunny ears" (dried points in the fabric) on the shoulders and they are especially great for heavier shirts/tops/sweaters. Just don't hang wet clothing on wire hangers - they can cause rust spots. Before I found Tide Hangers, I reinforced the shoulders of heavy tops/sweaters with old shoulder pads (between the hanger and the garment) to keep them smooth while they dried. There are a couple things that cause "stiffness" in jeans. The first is the type of cotton used to make them, and second, the accumulation of soap in your washed clothing. I'd suggest switching to Charlie's Soap and using vinegar in the rinse to eliminate the soap residue in your laundry. I can't stand my jeans dried in the dryer. They are limp and lifeless and they don't last nearly as long as when line dried. I hang pants from the cuffs - one cuff on one line, and the other cuff on the line behind - folded so there's a crease up the middle of he pant leg. This gives a natural crease to the legs and the crotch gets air circulation so it dries quickly. Traditionally pants are hung by the waist, but I don't like the results - the crotch always takes twice as long to dry as the rest of the pants. The weight of the top of the pants being on the bottom also helps pull out wrinkles as they dry. I also have found things have less wrinkles if I set my washing machine on SLOW spin and hang clothing that is wetter than what you'd want if you were drying them in the dryer. Gravity and wet clothing will help to pull out wrinkles. Since I've installed enough line in a room in the basement to hold all the wash, I rarely hang clothing outside anymore (whites occasionally to give them a natural bleaching from the sun). Hanging indoors keeps the birds from doing their "thing" on the clothing; bugs and bees from finding a hiding place in sleeves; no sun fading colors; no wind tugging and whipping things to death (a HUGE problem in Kansas), no contending with weather... With the addition of a ceiling fan to circulate air over the hanging clothes, and a dehumidifier that must run from spring until fall indoors anyway because of our high humidity, the basement is a much better plan altogether. I'm just sorry I didn't think of it sooner (LOL). Now I rarely use the dryer. -Grainlady...See Moreyoyobon_gw
