Is organic the wave of the future, or woo-woo pie in the sky?
Comments (71)wow! What a great thread! And I only came on the organic forum today because I finally made that compost bin and felt like gathering a little knowledge from fellow gardeners. Boy! Have you guys educated me! Along with the often unreliable words of 'organic' and 'sustainable' to describe gardening practices, where precisely does 'permaculture' fit in? I have had the opportunity to brush the surface of this topic, but haven't put it in perspective completely with the terms 'organic' and 'sustainable' yet. I know there is a permaculture formum on gardenweb, but this thread seems to be on the track of discussing such things, particularly how to "tread lightly on the earth" and how to feed individuals, families, villages and the world effectively. Organic farming is from the heart. It's such a long thread, I've already forgotten who said it. and I've mutilated the text, though hopefully not the meaning. That said, I'm in complete agreement with the sentiment. What we aspire to, ie producing nutritious food from the earth without damaging the earth, can not be regulated in any meaningful way until the whole of community changes thought patterns. The ideas of "nutritious food" and "not damaging the earth" need to be of higher priority than the profits that come of this coaxing life from dirt. Of course, many might counter that statement with thoughts on money efficiency. But here, I say again, these ideals can't be accomplished unless the individual, family, community and world changes thought patterns, especially as related to money and commerce. Well, I suppose that went off on a side-track..but I'd still like to know where you think 'permaculture' relates to the discussion of catchwords in agriculture and what the true wave of the future will be. Organic might be happening now, but how do you think these slacking regulations will affect the future of raising food? Trish...See MoreIf someone has time, can you please explain how you act as your
Comments (17)I worked as an Interior Designer in a past life - BC, 'before children' :)... So I know where you are coming from. In your initial post you posed your question in a very general and broad way which: 1. makes it difficult to answer and 2. indicated to some that you might be ill prepared to take on this challenge. Perhaps you were just trying to find out the different ways owner/builders were working on their projects? If you are seriously considering being your own GC then there are resources available to you on the internet and at the library. As dixiedoodle mentioned, The Owner Builder Book is one, it is great. There is a website as well. www.ownerbuilderbook.com I took a class at a community college and the website for the teacher is www.ownerbuilder.com. Tons of good information -that is how I found this site. :) We have decided to hire a builder but I think all of my research will still be an asset in our build. To answer your question about whether you can choose some of your own subs - it will depend on the Builder and your contract. If that is important to you then you should stipulate that and find someone willing to work with you on that basis. An option that might work for you is to find a GC/Builder that will get you through drywall and then you can GC the finish work yourself since you have contacts in the industry. Hope that helps....See Moreklimkm-can you explain?
Comments (15)klimkm - GREAT to read your posts. Especially the one of 3/26/07. I resonate quite a bit with it. My husband and I are in the very difficult position of needing to take a "time out" from his parents, as well. Although my MIL will probably never be officially evaluated, it's become evident from a number of reputable sources that she has both Borderline and Narcissistic Personality Disorders. Your words about needing to let the individual know, in a firm way, what's unacceptable are spot on! But it's the tedious, repetative, continual need to state and re-state our boundaries that just gets so exhausting. No matter how clear we are ("We love YOU, but we don't want to be around you if you're going to do X,Y & Z"), she cannot take any kind of responsibility for her actions and finds ways to make us the bad guys. We fear for our children - her crazymaking (screaming, name-calling, hysterical stuff) has already hurt one of them deeply - which is what drives us to keep re-stating the boundaries, even if it means we don't talk for awhile and are made out to be the evil, heartless children who are holding her grandchildren hostage when she talks to others. Great words, and encouraging to me in this season of our family life. Thanks....See MoreIs there a practical answer or is this just woo-woo?

I have a habit of putting them in dishes and putting that dish in the refrigerator...sometimes there will be a few in the fridge....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
