deck staining looks rough

We have had a tough time with our deck. Our painter decided to paint our deck with Sherwin William Super Deck Paint however since we have an underdecking the Super Deck paint was not able to let the wood breathe and the water sat on top of the deck. Yes, I know NEVER paint a deck and we told the painter this. So after this problem the painter came back and sanded down our deck and rolled on one time the Sherwin Williams Super Deck Solid Stain self primer.

We now have a deck that looks rough/splotchy. We are trying to figure what went wrong and what to do next. The painter is nervous about putting a second layer of stain because the wood might not be able to breathe (problem before). I am wondering if he did not sand well enough hence the rough patches or if there is some other reason we are missing. I do not want to go back to the painter unless we have a clear understanding of what is needed to fix the issue.

One of the users on their website states the SECOND COAT should be applied 4 hours later....

Like all wood applications, preparation is key. Full removal of the original finish is going to be the biggest issue. Without proper preparation, you will have issues.

The best way to figure this out is to find the can and read the directions...it might need a second coat. The first application might be perfectly normal or it might be completely wrong. You won't know until you reach out to Sherwin Williams and ask.

Thanks for your response. We had a rep from Sherwin Williams come out and he said this stain only requires one coat. He was nervous if we put a second coat on whether the wood would be able to breathe. The Sherwin Williams person said he was not sure what to do....

What did you decide to do? We are attempting to stain our deck this weekend. We had our decks re-stained professionally two years ago. They used Sherwin Williams, Deckscapes semi-transparent. The decks look terrible now. The painter charged me over $5k two years ago and wants to charge $2k to re-do now. The painter had the Sherwin Williams rep out and he did not stand by the product at all. We decided to do it ourselves. We were going to use a Behr solid stain due to CR reviews. Now I'm seeing a lot of people have been unhappy with that product in other reviews. It is so much work; I'd hate to use a bad product. We cleaned the deck yesterday and are planning on sanding and staining today. I was hoping to get some good advice on GW. I'm currently more involved in the kitchen forum.

I tested a bunch of stains. I like the Defy Butternut color on our rough sawn cedar (#8, lower right corner) but on the smooth cedar it looks a little red/orange. I think we will solve that by keeping the ceiling of our gazebo natural w/ a poly coat and do the outside and pillars with the defy butternut. Second picture is our gazebo (upper left) and two inspiration pics of the color I am trying to get. Bottom right are my samples, Defy Butternut is the closest I found.

I’m going to agree with Joseph on this one. You basically have two choices but both will require you to replace the screws. (Depending in the size of the screw that’s in there go with a stainless #8x2.5” trim head). I’d start by backing out a couple screws and hitting it with a sander to test how deep the staining goes. If it’s surface then you can replace the screws without flipping the boards and just give it a good sanding. Option 2) If staining is deep you can try flipping the board hoping there’s no staining on the underside and face screw the boards back down. Option 3) and one I would’ve recommended from the get go... Use a biscuit joiner like Joseph showed in the video and cut a slot in the side of the board while utilizing a product like the Eb-ty Precision Clips for Ipe which I believe are the best product in the hidden fastener market. Unfortunately though, if you go the hidden fastener route, now you’ll be looking at empty screw holes on the face of your boards. Whichever route you go, while certainly a bit of a hassle, the issue is pretty readily rectifiable. Part of the beauty of wood over composite decking. Worst case scenario sanding should solve the problem and you’re deck will look like brand new...

That can be mildew and algae bleeding through. Did the painter use deck wash before sanding? This is a do over.
