$8,000 budget - Please help me find the right appliances.
Comments (13)Just curious: I thought the repair prone Elux ovens were the 2009 versions, and improvements have solved the problem? The reports of problems here on the forum have definitely fallen to nil since then. KitchenAid ovens have had such variable and negative reviews here, and additionally, such problems with non-responsive customer service, that I never even considered them. TGC, I found Consumer Reports to be sorely lacking in broad coverage of brands, certainly of a variety of models, and in judging the appliances in areas which I found important...like over time. A day of testing doesn't show it all. Also, their repair history type of reports are misleading, since they only cover a few types of problems. For instance, I did a survey for them in which it made our Maytag fridge look like a star, because it didn't allow for information about how many times we had to replace parts to the drawers, how much we spent in shipping costs for parts, or the evaporator motor we replaced ourselves when the original went out just after the warranty period. They don't take into account necessary parts and repairs that don't require a manufacturer's service tech. Anyway, you're doing things the right way...Consult CR, but also look to resources like this forum and AJ Madison reviews where you get reports from real life experience, and from people who use their appliances in all different ways....See MoreFabric you can't find any more...
Comments (25)donna, have you googled for free doll clothing patterns? I found quite a few of them when I was sewing for Emerson. I found more for the larger dolls than the Wellies. You get a simple bodice, sleeve, tights, etc, and go from there. The hardest part was the shoes. I am tempted to buy a package of those pre cut soles and make a few. I tried winging if for the shoes and it was a hit or miss. I am tempted to buy one of the knock off dolls from WM or Target. I actually liked the ones from Target. Really, what does it ultimately matter? I do see that there is better articulation of the AG doll. And, the hair is better rooted. It really is a bit better made, but I wonder just how much it really matters. When I was a girl I remember playing with baby dolls up until about 8 years old or so. Then, the fashion dolls took us into a couple more years when we sewed for them. I don't even think that my grand daughter gets out her Wellie much. Perhaps if she had a friend to play with, but she doesn't. There is no kid culture on the street where they live and her parents. have not cultured a friendship with any of the kids she spends the day with at day care. I do see that the girls at day care will gravitate to the dolls that they have there while the boys are usually shoving something around or chasing each other. There is a camera and I can watch her and her little brother at day care. I am a bit confused by the nature of the AG dolls. On the one hand, they are not toddlers, yet they don't really seem much like young girls, either. There is something about the hair that puts them into an odd age relation. Still I can see that they are fun to sew for and so darned cute!!!! I am tempted to buy one just because it is fun to sew for them. I am a grandmother now and I still want to play with dolls! it is a lot easier to find something sew for a doll than for a real person. When I was sewing for the Wellie one thing that I found was so different from times past is that it is almost impossible to buy ribbon by the yard anymore. Used to be that you could go into the store and have them cut any length of various ribbons that you wanted. Now, you have to buy a reel of cheap quality ribbon when what you might want is one foot of three different ones. I ended up buying a bag of ribbons on Amazon. Much the same is true with the small trims. My local store is so badly kept and so badly stocked, so it may be better at some others. You see these lovely little creations that some have sewn for the dolls but finding those little embellishments is often difficult. Seriously, my local store has shelves that are falling down and merchandise that is spilling off of them, empty dislplays and shopping carts full of fabric bolts, buttons all over the floor and it is stacked to the ceiling with fleece. It really is awful. The corporation just does not invest enough in hired help to keep things running. There is no competition, so what does it matter? I think it matters in that it turns away customers who are just going to go online for what they want, not just fabric, but notions and crafty things as well....See Moreanyone else find this octuplet thing ridiculous?
Comments (27)i agree the whole thing drives me nuts-partly because i think that multiple births or numerous adoptions have been glorified as of late. that being said, i think TLC has done a great job of picking a couple of families that parent their kids well, no matter the number. for instance, the duggars (seventeen kids and counting) have a great setup. they shop at thrift stores, buy food in bulk, even make their own laundry soap. mom home schools the kids, the kids know how to take care of things around the house EVEN I don't know how to do!! and the best part, IMO, is they're debt free!! they built a gorgeous, really big house to provide for their family and paid for it as they went. no mortgage, no car payment, i LOVE it!! yea, they may have a million kids because they feel like God has planned things that way-and that's fine by me. that's not necessarily how i feel, but they are actually living the scriptures they believe in. as for jon and kate plus 8-i have to admit i've read the blogs, i read their book, read aunt jodi's sister's blog, watched the video-frankly i don't know what to think but i do enjoy their show. a lot of people seem to think they did IVF as well, but they did IUI. two very different treatments. the six ended up as a result of overstimulated ovaries. and they're against selective reduction. that's entirely their prerogative. they didn't implant an obscene number of embryos or any of that-it just happened that way. frankly, i'm kinda annoyed that people have so much time to concern themselves with what jon and kate do or do not get, who offers them trips, how much their new house was...on and on and on!! seriously, people, anyone of us that has ever bought a 'people' magazine has contributed to paying brad and angelina 14 MILLION DOLLARS for pictures of their newborn twins. THAT is what is disgusting to me. we want to begrudge these people and their kids a 1.3 or 1.4 million dollar house on serious acreage (i want to say 17 acres, but don't quote me) when 17 acres and a large house in my area would cost at least 3-5 million. AND I LIVE IN FARM CITY, IDAHO!! not to mention their 'new' house is like 10 years old. i'm one of the gazillions that's been hit hard by this stupid downturn in the economy-and i've had to swallow a BIG piece of humble pie!! i've had to restructure my mortgage so i wouldn't lose my house, asked the local gas company to cut me some slack on my payments, and sold anything i could possibly sell to keep my head above water. if i had someone show up at my door and offer to help me in any way-paper towels, heating assistance, new clothing, even a trip to hawaii...you're dang right i'm taking it!! i help and have always helped when it's within my means...now people are doing the same for me. i don't feel like i'm taking advantage. what i DO think is taking advantage is a single, unemployed mom EXPECTING handouts from people, a lot of whom have nothing to give right now. i think its irresponsible of her dr. to implant such a huge number of embryos after several SUCCESSFUL rounds of IVF. it's interesting to me that kaiser permanente is where she ended up, IMO knowing they would have to pick up the tab for the oct's hospital stay (she was already prego when they took over her care) and that taxpayers money would pick up the tab after that!! it's really frustrating to me. if she really felt that strongly about destroying embryos there's always donation. there's probably a billion things we don't know about these situations-but i'm not going to begrudge people that have made success stories out of something really, really, difficult. the difference, IMO, is that this oct. mom made things difficult for HERSELF...this one is no fluke!!...See MoreOT: Random crafty thread.
Comments (29)Nicholas, yes it was a storm several years ago, we don't get hurricanes thank goodness. Our clematis hybrids come on a huge range of colours and types, they're perennial climbers that can put on a lot of growth in one season so they're cut down low each year. Never heard of maypops, it's our passion flower, I have grown a potted one a while back, the blooms are really interesting. Pagan, yours may be the wild form we call Old mans beard! It scrambles through hedges in the UK, these garden hybrids are spectacular with flowers easily 6inches in diameter in every colour imaginable. The tree is an English oak which has been pollarded to keep it under control. I have a large garden as you can see but it would take over and cut out so much light. It gets the chop every 10years to keep it within bounds. The plant house is coming on a treat btw, good for you! Gill...See MoreRusty
