Is an exhaust fan necessary?
Comments (15)I had the same situation when we remodeled our 1950 kitchen; no ventilation and it would have been quite expensive to add it to get a vent hood. In my case I also felt our cooking patterns made a vent hood somewhat unnecessary. I never deep fry, and even sauteing something is a rare occurrence. Thus, there really isn't much grease or steam generated in my kitchen. Occasionally when we are boiling or steaming we need the exhaust but that's not too frequent. I opted for an OTR microwave with a built in exhaust fan. It does the job on the rare occasions we need it, so we've not missed the exhaust fan/vent hood. I think that look is somewhat trendy, in part due to the popularity of the 'restaurant kitchen' look in new remodels. It's the same reason I didn't spend big money on a high end stove. My GE Profile suits me fine and my microwave exhaust does too....See MoreCeiling fan(s) for screened porch
Comments (5)It can take the edge of the heat, we have one and we used it a few times this summer. If you are having someone else build the porch for you, adding fans is going to cost very little compared to what you are paying for it anyway. I guess if you are doing it all yourself it will be a larger percentage. But generally you can get a good fan for under $200 and it's relatively quick for an electrician to wire it up....See MoreHow to install 1st floor ceiling fan, no outlet
Comments (5)See what bus_driver (above) said. If you want a neat job, then at a minimum, the surface of the ceiling, be it drywall or plaster, needs to have a hole cut in it to mount the fan box. Hopefully, wires could be fished behind that surface to the box. Also, how do you plan to control the fan? Many modern fans have remote controls, so you wouldn't have to mount a wall switch....See MoreCeiling fans and whole house fans in older MHs?
Comments (9)Hi wantoretire_did! Thank you so much for the suggestions! I've been meaning to get to HD and my local ACE for a walk-about. I'm going to go when I have a couple of hours and don't have to rush around. Just walk around with my trusty legal pad and take notes. Lighting is a big part of what I want to look at. I really appreciate your suggestion because that didn't even cross my mind! I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of the fixtures in my house are original, and at 37, they need to retire, lol! I just can't see paying some guy from CL for the rest of my life to come replace bulbs and wash the fixtures! I have electric burners, but I can see how that could easily happen with gas. I'm pretty much leaning against the ceiling fans now; cathyyg made very good points, and these seven ft. ceilings feel so low already, even at my height, that I fear the fans would just draw attention to them. We've got a good system with the fans now, and I don't think ceiling fans are as necessary as I thought they were when I first posted this. Yes! Taking lots of pictures! :-) I hope all is well with you and yours!...See Moreshari13
