Maui Was Pretty Wowie.
Comments (16)You're right, Lorna. I now know that Hawaii is definitely a different (and amazing) place. Annette - I don't know what kind of lavender it is. I just thought it looked great, and knew that this audience would appreciate it. And, yes, another week would have been just about right. Nancy - It was indeed pretty great. FlowerLady - Hawaii did remind me a lot of Florida, except, as you said, for the flatness. The rainy side of Maui was lush and jungle-like, which I haven't seen in Florida, though it may exist somewhere. Also, at least while we were there, we had a constant breeze, day and night, which made the warmth and humidity very easy to take. Martha - I will be very happy to make do with those things, although you did scare me a little when you wrote web fiends. Probably a typo, right? ...Martha? ...Right? Vikki - Have a great time in Canada. You will have a fantastic experience at the Butchart Gardens. And Hawaii the next year? Absolutely! Thanks for helping me identify those flowers. Patti - I'm really glad you liked my pictures. They do look a lot like paradise, don't they? The trip was definitely one for the scrapbook (figuratively speaking, I don't really do scrapbooking.) Thank you all for your welcome and friendly comments. ThinMan...See MoreIf not Maui, where? Palm Springs?
Comments (21)WOW! You ladies are a *goldmine* of information and ideas! I'll get DH to read through all these great posts. Donna -- Thanks for the offer. Do you get out to Maui to use the timeshare sometimes? We own a 1 BR 2 bath vacation rental at Maui Kamaole in S. Kihei. If we decided to go elsewhere we'd rent that out instead of using it ourselves. Cost-wise, it would probably be a wash; we might even come out ahead if we could take our Westie and didn't need a pet-sitter for 4-6 weeks. We're going to Maui next winter; already bought flights. I'm looking for alternatives for winter 2011. Maybe I'm dismissing Florida out of hand -- judging by old memories. My mother and her RI pals used to go to Pompano Beach. I remember crawling along the highway behind some old geezer, but now WE are the geezers! DH, DS and I spent some unpleasantly cool days in Orlando, but that was December/Christmas Break. The North Shore of Chicago moves en masse to the Gulf over school breaks. (How do you get away from it all when it comes with you? LOL) A long-time friend and her DH bought at Atlantis (Ft. Lauderdale) a few years ago and are spending more time there -- but he *lives* on the golf course. I have to laugh at the mental picture of DH piloting an RV *anywhere* -- good suggestion, just not for him! You've all been so nice. I was a little leary of posting. This is a very trivial 'problem' given the state of the world....See MoreWhere do your Hoyas spend the winter?
Comments (11)LOL! One year after bringing in several large floor plants, I noticed a bunch of scattered dirt beside one pot and a place in the soil that looked like someone had dug into it with a spoon. A black striped lizard was hiding in the floor under the wheeled plant cart. (I won't even mention the time I came home and dragged several big plants into the office because the wind was blowing really cold and I didn't want to wait for DH to help. And I didn't inspect them like I usually do. About an hour later I walked into the office and found a little chicken snake lounging under my desk chair. Surprise!)...See MoreWhere to spend $$$ - finish basement or upgrades to main floor
Comments (44)Oh wow! This moved fast! Thank you for all of the input, I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to respond sooner. To answer a few questions... our home is currently 4 bedrooms/2 full and one half bath. On the main floor are the kitchen, laundry, powder room, family room, morning room (used as main dining area), library, and screened in porch (with vinyl windows). Upstairs are the four bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. My boys are 13, 10, and 4. We homeschool so all areas of the home are used on a daily basis. As far as guests go, we only have family visit once or twice a year and only 2 people at a time. We do not need a dedicated guest room. The basement is not a full walkout, it has an areaway, full patio door with steps up to the patio. There are 6 functioning hopper windows. There are currently no egress windows in the space. We’ve had two quotes to finish the basement, one in 2015 and one just last week. I had the same local basement contractor come out both times (not a basement finishing company, but a higher end contractor that does just basements). The pricing has increased dramatically in that timeframe. We’re talking $16k more from 2015 to 2020 for the exact same quote. I follow the real estate market in our area and I would say that it’s about 50/50 for finished basements in our neighborhood. Of those that are finished some have been done by the builder, some by homeowners, others by small local contractors, and others by higher end basement specific contractors. The list price is not impacted that greatly by a finished basement. For example, a home that is the same floor plan as ours that had all updates made to the main living areas and did not have a finished basement sold for $360k last year. Another home (same floor plan) just 2 houses away from that one is listed right now with a finished basement (no bathroom) for $349k. Nancy R z5- The dead space in my upstairs living isn’t an issue with outlets, it’s because of the size of the room and because I have a tall bookcase in that corner on the side of the fireplace. If I took the bookcase down and put a cabinet or table there I could have a lamp in that space....See Morechisue
