Fireplace and built-ins-- Second guessing my design
Comments (28)Thanks architect! Love that design. I considered a similar layout, but decided to go a different route. Mostly because moving the fireplace down the wall would result in 8-9' of cabinetry on one side. Maybe it would have looked ok, but I wasn't sold on that piece being so LONG. So unfortunately, at this point, fp stays. Womp, womp. Do you have thoughts on where the shelving should stop in relation to the mantel? Does just below seem odd to you? Will cutting the 10' tall wall exactly in half look off?...See MoreIdeas for visually balancing this huge vaulted wall?
Comments (11)Thank you, Everyone! I did decide to draw the eye up to emphasize the vaut and skylights. I think my cat is happy with the result. The dining room portion stayed where it was originally because the internet modem was on the wall by the heat stove (see wood pile). We aded the entertainment center for more storage, then topped it with a fluufy cloud painting and an emormous clock. We used the industrial cables to good use to string a drop light chandelier over the dining room table where there is no recessed lighting up above....See MoreNeed color help for travertine fireplace and orange cherry built-ins.
Comments (27)I love the Carla Aston article someone suggested! There are two articles about updating warm beige interiors with travertine (although mine is new). One suggests whites and the other suggests deep grays. I didn’t know there were grays with red undertone! I need to go and get a Granite AF-660 color chip. It’s not as dark as some other grays I’ve looked at. The room looks dark in the evening, but it does get decent light during the day. It has a skylight and glass patio doors. I’ll also be adding a floor lamp. There is a large white leather sectional in the room, too. It adds quite a bit of brightness and seems to reflect light. It’s another reason why I would prefer not to paint the entire room white....See MoreBalancing an awkward bedroom fireplace
Comments (18)I hear you. I wouldn't want to take a picture of my own bedroom right now. My husband thinks the clothes go on top of the dresser instead of in the drawers. Can you sit and talk with your husband and explain how the extra things in the room cause you some anxiety (I know that's what happens with me) and it makes it difficult to enjoy the space? Sometimes living with all the stuff around you makes you forget how nice it is to have a minimal, pared down space. Is there an extra room you can use to just put everything you don't need immediately and try bringing back a few things at a time until you're both happy? As far as the cable box, they make wireless boxes that can be put right in a closet so you don't even see them. Or, if you mount the t.v. in the other corner where the armoire is, you can add a small shelf underneath for the box. Getting back to your original question, the fireplace, I don't think built-ins are the way to go. As I said, just refacing and adding in the gas insert you want is where you should start. Is the insert something you plan on doing right away? What would you like the fireplace to look like when it's finished?...See Moreturnby
