Michelia Alba 911 EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comments (6)amberlin, I suggest you repost your thread to the Fragrant Plants forum. You'll receive lots more replies there as 'Michelia Alba' is considered one of the 'benchmarks' of fragrance in the 'Fragrant Plants' forum. Anyway, to answer your question, rapid and widespread falling and yellowing of mature leaves especially when it starts at the bottom of the plant and upwards, is a sure sign of overwatering and root rot. Did you do anything to the plant like transplanting it? If you transplanted it, make sure the rootball is at the SAME or HIGHER level in the soil as in the original pot/container. Burying the rootball deep into the soil CAN kill it especially when overwatered. I can tell you now that based from my experience, once ALL of the mature leaves of 'Michelia Alba' turn yellow and SAG or DROOP, DEATH is almost as SURE AS THE SUN RISES. Any emergency procedures you do now will be of little help. In case however, you have that 'fighting spirit' to try to save the plant, (there is 30% probability that it could still 'survive'), you should dry the SOIL to the 'CORRECT' moisture level within 24 hours before the 'exponential' root rotting and decay becomes irreversible. If you can't dry the soil to the 'CORRECT' moisture level within 24 hours, better repot or transfer the plant into DRY SOIL and water VERY LIGHTLY afterwards. (DO NOT soak the soil especially soil near the rootball area). DO NOT fertilize a stressed plant like this. If you do decide to TRANSPLANT or REPOT, do take note of the proper way to position the rootball as I mentioned above. Avoid putting the stressed plant in FULL SUN while it is still in critical condition. (Especially avoid the NOON or EARLY AFTERNOON sun). Michelias are *VERY SENSITIVE* to OVERWATERING and are very succeptible to root rot. Good SOIL DRAINAGE and good WATERING HABITS are of PARAMOUNT importance. I hope you save your Michelia Alba. It hurts to lose such an excellent fragrant plant. tropical...See MoreJust recieved my michelia alba!
Comments (10)To my knowledge all M. alba's are grafted or air layered. I got mine off a seller on ebay and it was air layered and bloomed the first year for me. I no longer have the plant. I just went through my old post and it lists a link to the seller and they currently have some available. :) My thread: http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1906364/got-my-michelia-alba?n=42 My ebay source: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Himala-Michelia-Alba-Grafted-Live-Plant-Super-Fragrant-/190394381403?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0amp;hash=item2c5463b45b...See MoreHelp with Michelia
Comments (6)Hello. THAT IS EXACTLY what happens to all of mine EVERY STINKING YEAR! I have spent over 75 dollars every year for the same tree after mines died of exactly what yours is doing! I have tried every year different methods and still the same ole same ole. I tried a plastic pot and warm conditions in a sunny window....Died I tried a very cool room with air movement in a plastic pot..Died. I have tried a very bright porch with cool temps, 6o's and it died in a plastic pot! I have tried growing pot in pots, very good draining mixes, fertilizing, and even fans with breezes nothing, they all died. SAME THING HAPPENS TO MY LEAVES.. So this year I tried something different after it started doing the very same thing up until a month ago. I switched to a clay pit, well draining mix, warm conditions, in my green house. I sprayed for bugs, in particular mites which I can promise you are on the leaves, and spray for disease...I also use a fan not blowing at it directly but the air in the area. So far so good!!! I also use rain water, not tap for the first time. The progression of death of the leaves like that stopped immediately! I swear between warmth, water without salt deposits, weak fertilizer, and a clay pot for porosity, and air movement, warmer temps, spray for bugs and a disease control. I got it!! Keeping my fingers crossed. I have lots of new growth coming on and the leaves stopped turning brown like that. Could it be the salts in my water? Warmer roots? Clay pot? Lack of pests? Disease control from cooler temps/? Dry air?Not sure?...See MoreRoot Pruning Michelia Alba
Comments (18)I will be watching this thread. So far no one has come forward saying that they root pruned their plant and it survived. But for people who are growing it in a pot, one day they will be faced with this question. There is a limit to the upsizing of the pot and pruning the tree. Ok a quick google and I get this: "One issue with containerized Michelia alba is that its root system will use up all the nutrient and soil space after a few years. Repotting into slightly bigger containers will work for several years, but eventually the gardener has to either plant it in ground or do a surgery called root pruning. According to Calvin, one has to time this pruning just before a new flush of leaves is coming out (usually there are three flushes of new leaves every year), take the tree out of its pot and skin off an one-inch-thick layer of roots for a quarter of the whole exposed root surface. Let the plant recuperate in half shade for a couple of weeks afterwards and maybe thin out a few top branches to balance the water needs. I have not done it myself but will probably have to try it in a few years." So who is up to give it a try and tell us the results. One heads up is that fleshy roots are the worst ones to deal with when root pruning....See Moresabut
