Anyone else having issues with their roses right now?
Comments (17)Around the first of August several of us here suddenly got terrible outbreaks of blackspot. We had all been spraying regularly, but it just looked like we had been spraying with blackspot spores. We had quite a bit of leaf drop, and it was very difficult to control, even when hitting them with Manzate three times as prescribed. When the weather finally cooled off, it seemed to slow down quite a bit. Now it looks like mine have Cercospora. Big black round spots, but the leaves aren't turning yellow and dropping. I guess it's true - "If it isn't one thing, it's another"....See MoreAnyone else watering like crazy now?
Comments (10)Up here in the SF Bay Area, the midday hours have been warm enough for short sleeved shirts, but mornings, late afternoons and evenings are very cold. This greatly slows down growth rates so I have watered twice - once a month in both Nov and December. Both waterings were about half the amount I'd normally run through the soaker hoses in summer. The new plants I put in seem to need watering only once every 7-10 days, again probably due to the chilly evenings. Even the container plantings are okay with once a week in this weather. When we planned the garden installation back in 2002, I tried to make it as water conserving as possible. I have 15 cottage garden beds totalling 2100+ sq. ft., several of which live completely on runoff since we live halfway up a moderately steep hillside. Our temps tend to stay moderate even in summer and we're on the edge of the fog belt which helps too. Even in summer I only water once every 10-14 days, depending on temps. Soaker hoses, mulching, replacing the adobe clay with purchased compost, and grouping plants with similar water needs together means the garden uses around $15-20/month of the water bill, almost all of which is during the summer. So if I have to water a few times in winter, it's not a big deal except for dragging around the hoses to connect them up to the soakers....See MoreAnyone else having fun pickling peppers right now?
Comments (40)Bill, You are the nth person calling me a mad man. I am proud of my mental state...LOL If any off balance fool wants to replicate my Nga Chutney pickle, he or she may have to either pay the royalty for the recipe or try and hold me to ransom. Hahahaha Seriously speaking, a research of almost two years has gone into perfecting the recipe which I am planning to exploit commercially (if this economic downturn continues any more). I am also giving finishing touches to my Hot sauce which my friend in Ohio is going to test, taste and certify as "Fit for Non Human consumption" Hope you won't mind dear friend. Comments (14)Last week our 11-year-old GE Profile SxS died. All our appliances were almond, which was discontinued shortly after we moved here. So we decided to replace the entire kitchen with SS. We only had one day to shop and went to a locally owned store and a freestanding Sears appliance showroom. Based on many comments here I wasn't interested in dealing with the big box stores. We were on a very very tight budget - $2,500 for fridge, gas range, OTR microwave, and dishwasher. The salesman at the locally-owned store (Home TV & Appliance in Phoenix) worked very hard with us, shaved the costs, and found a $300 rebate for the purchase. We bought all GE and so far I'm really pleased with everything. We'll soon be moving and turning this house into a rental. I think the new appliances will help us get an extra $100 a month for rent. One other comment would be about french door refrigerators. I have always disliked that style. My best friend just had to have the latest thing a few years ago, bought a french door, and has now confessed to me that she totally hates her fridge. She is a bit absent-minded and the doors frequently don't fully close when she shuts them. I shudder to think how much electricity she's wasting with open fridge doors....See More- 7 years ago
