labor costs for custom curtains or drapes
Comments (50)I'm about to make 117" interlined double pleat drapes with a finish Width of 56" and Length of 108". These will be hand sewn with the exception of the pleat sides. I don't want to overcharge, but I also don't want to undercharge for detailed custom work that will take a long time. There will be 2 separate panels...See Morecustom sewn drapery What to charge customers?
Comments (5)Peggy, Sky is absolutely correct. There are so many things involved, but the MAIN thing is that you have to figure out how much you want to earn per hour of work. Charging by the foot -- is it lined, interlined, unlined, shirred, pinch-pleated, etc. All of these things would make a big difference, so I don't see pricing by the foot as the most logical way. Another thing, you will spend a great deal of time with clients. Will you take them to fabric shops? Will you go to their home to measure (then I think you need additional liability insurance). There will also be times when you do a great deal of research for someone, only to have them say they decided they don't want the drapes, doesn't like them, too expensive, etc. What if you buy the fabrics and the person changes his/her mind? What deposits will you require? If someone comes to you with fabric and measurements in hand, it would probably be pretty easy to calculate a price. Otherwise, there are so many variables. I have a friend who is an incredible seamstress, designer, etc. She is an incredible talent. She wanted to start a business of making wedding and bridal dresses. She turned out beautiful dresses, but made little money. People didn't come on time for fittings, gained or lost weight before the dress was done, etc. She spent hours and hours shopping with them for the appropriate fabrics. None of this is meant to scare you. Home-based businesses are awesome and you can make money doing it. Just be very careful of how you do it. As Sky has said, do a lot of research and really think it through. Good Luck!!!...See MoreBallard custom drapes? Or other custom drape options/advice?
Comments (0)Does anyone have experience with Ballard Design drapes? I would be especially interested if you used them for fabrication with fabric that you provided. I'm trying to get a feel for overall quality. Also, did you price out similar work with a local custom shop? I LOVE traditional drapes, but they are sooooo expensive to do in a custom fabric. Any advice in general would be greatly appreciated! I can sew, but to do a pinch/box pleat, line, weight and trim a full set of curtains is above my skill level. Thanks!!...See MoreBest place for custom length drapes??
Comments (16)I also used JC Penney’s for custom drapes. They do a fabulous job. I would tend to agree with the statements about not putting giant long drapes in. I have a home with 30’ ceilings and soaring windows. There aren’t any window coverings up that high - with the exception of the master bedroom where a wall of windows watches the sunrise every morning. It’s breathtaking, but sometimes you need to sleep past 5 am. Let the windows be the architectural feature....See Moreblubird
