How long to wait after soil dries to water aloe vera again?

I didn't realize my fast draining mix + clay pot only held moisture for around 3-4 days before drying out completely, so some of the older leaves on my aloe have thin tips. I had allowed 2-3 weeks at a time to pass in this mix and the leaves got progressively concave until I began to water once a week. The light is south west facing right up against the window. I water until it drains, wait a few minutes, then water until draining again. Starting from when the soil dries out completely to the bottom, how many days should pass ideally before the next watering? A day? Two? People say aloe should be allowed to dry out, but how long? 2 inches below the soil or all the way through? It's doing very well but I wonder if it might do even better with more water since the tips are still flat.

Basically, my question is, how soon can I water again and still avoid root rot? The soil's barely damp on day 3 and bone dry on day 4, but on hot days it's 2 and 3 respectively.
