What kind of grass in Southern NH Lawn

See the pics below. I was going to overseed this area of lawn this fall because of thin grass. This thick -bladed, light green grass has taken over. It's everywhere in my area in southern NH, north central Vermont this year, I suspect because we've had lots of rain. I don't think it's crabgrass, but I don't know what it is. It will make overseeding very difficult because the thick coverage won't allow for much seed/soil contact. I'm not looking for a perfect lawn so I don't really mind this, but for all I know it's an annual so I wanted to see if I can find out more.

I'm no expert but it looks to me like Kentucky-31 (KY-31) bluegrass. My lawn was inundated with it a few years ago. The wide, flat blades are sort of a giveaway. There's no selective weed killer that will take it out, only RoundUp. I personally find it ugly, but it stays green all year so if you don't mind it, you can leave it and it's super low maintenance.

Thanks! I'd be surprised if this was bluegrass because it looks like it volunteered. I drove in to Boston today and it is everywhere north of the city. Looks like it has done best in poor soils where other grasses weren't doing well (along edges, by the road, etc.).

The problem is that your question is one of variables and odds. Even planting in the Fall is no quarantee of success, but the odds are much better than seeding at any other time. Summer planting has almost no chance of success, but it's not a guarantee of failure. Spring seeding is better than summer, but less successful than Fall. Spring seeding should be done in late March through April. You are a bit late, but we are seeing a cool Spring so far. KBG can take 3 wks to germinate, that puts you into the beginning of June and the start of warmer/hot weather. The young turf isn't going to have much of a root system, so you are going to need to water alot all through summer to keep it alive and it's going to be more susceptable to disease. Technically, it's not too late to seed (seed will germinate with soil temps between approx. 60-85 degrees), but seeding in Spring (and the later into Spring you go) the greater the odds of being unsuccessful. Sorry, I just don't have a better answer. Edit: If it was me I'd wait until September. The seed will be fine if kept in a cool, dry basement off the floor. I suggest you put down half a pound/k of 46-0-0 urea right now to promote growth and some spread of the existing turf. Put down anothe half pound of urea around June 1st. Most turf grasses in the PNW will be blends of various cool weather grass seeds, however sod farms seem to prefer monocultures and often go with a single type. Because many of these grasses look virtually indistinguishable from each other, best to go back to the source and ask where you purchased the sod. Because our cool season grasses want to go dormant in summer, I tend to recommend fall as the best time to overseed or do much remedial lawn care. What you can do now is to aerate the soil, using a plug or core aerator. Aerating is one of the best things you can do for a lawn or the ideal first step in lawn care prep. After aerating, spread a thin layer of compost, just a half inch or so. Water as necessary but not too frequently and deeply when you do. In my Puget Sound climate, once every week to 10 days is usually sufficient through summer provided the water penetrates down 6-8 inches. Weed manually as required. Then in fall you can overseed. Again, cover with a thin layer of compost (better than peat or topsoil) and keep moist until full germination, usually about 10-14 days. Mow when the new grass is at least 2.5 inches tall. And you can still fertilize before winter. If you overseed in September, you should be able to fertilize in mid to late October. Of any time of year, the fall fertilizing is the most beneficial in our region. And opt for an organic product if you can.

For those interested in the custom skim cover solution, I did some homework. I called the owner of Environmental Pools who gave me the name of the product they used. ItÃ¯Â¿Â½s available at www.pouralid.com. It was designed to pour concrete, Kool-Deck or aggregate into, but clearly from this example it can be used for pavers too. And the price is incredibly reasonable. I called up the company and got the owner there too and he was a super nice guy and worked out overnighting two covers for me since my deck is almost done. They arrived bright and early and fit perfectly into my standard skimmer. If your contractor doesnÃ¯Â¿Â½t have them, you can order them online at www.waterlev.com. A few notes. The cover, again designed to have a concrete pour, is not nearly as deep as the full height of the Blu pavers so my landscaper is having to thin the paver out, which is fine because that will make it lighter. And they will need to mortar it to the lid base. Also, the cover comes in three parts. It has a plastic cover of whatever color you ordered (I picked grey but there are several choices), so even if you didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t do the custom application you would still get away from white. Then it had the lid itself that you pour or adhere the paver too. Then, and this is key, it has its own neck/frame that the lid sits in so that your concrete or pavers can be secured up against the lid without impeding it. Great design, and again surprisingly affordable. IÃ¯Â¿Â½m really happy I saw this here so thanks to the OP.

Hello, I live in Virginia and have a primarily tall fescue lawn (or as much as I can control that) This year I have noticed patches of a slightly different color and texture grass. The blades seem to swirl within large patches but also seem clumped together in smaller patches. The base of the stems are semi brownish and the stems seem to lay down on each other. they also have leaves or shoots coming out of the main stem. Not sure if that is correct terminology. Large patches appear to swirl in a way with most blades laid down and the center of the patch having mostly vertical blades. I have attached 2 pictures of a single larger patch and 2 pictures of a single smaller patch. I have looked everywhere to try to find out what this is with no success. I am hoping someone here could enlighten me. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. (Also I do not have any pets nor do any pets visit my yard) At tached Images

And while I wouldn't *choose* the look of it, I don't mind that so much. I'm mostly afraid it will winter kill and I'll have a mess next spring.

It looks just like one of the annual crabgrasses in my lawn, both the bright yellow green color at this time of year and the structure when I zoom in on the closeup. I have a lot of it in my ”lawn”.

I amin central NH between Concord and Laconia.

I suspected crabgrass but I've never seen so much of it! If it is crabgrass I guess I should try to overseed that area. I don't want to use roundup, so maybe weed-whack till I see a lot of dirt before I try to put down seed. Not too experienced with rehabbing a lawn.

Early to mid September is the ideal time in my area to overseed grass. Keep it moist.

there appears to be desirable grass intermingled among the crabgrass. i might just fertilize liberally this fall, control perennial weeds, and just make sure you have good preemergent coverage next spring through summer. the crabgrass will start to die out in September or October.

I was planning to fertilize and overseed soon. There's one area with very little good grass that's now completely covered with crabgrass. I do need better soil nutrition there, but also more good grass seed. I'm thinking now I'll try to weed whack the crabgrass where it's thick before I overseed to allow for more seed/soil contact. I figure it would be useless to overseed on it as thick as it is. I try to stay mostly organic so I've never used pre-emergents..
