Drystack stone wall - progress
Comments (45)from a sculptors point of view basalt is modestly challenging to work in comparison to other stones such a granite or sandstone , which are usually pretty predictable in their voice. It can be challenging to sound the stone ( tapping and listening for the stones voice that gives you a hint on how it is going to break as well visually seeing the voice ) and the tightness of the grain doesn't always split in how one would predict. In regards to cutting it's in the medium hard range. Dressing it from my perspective is totally delightful due to the internal and external color variation and how it takes on a totally different personality when texturized and or polished. We don't use columnar basalt for building walls normally. It is too expensive here. The columnar basalt is mostly used as sculptural elements and or sliced and textured and used as stepping stones ( quite beautiful when set into a hillside ) Regular native basalt field stone is regularly used in walling. Comments (1)The 3"/ft batter or rake looks OK. The base wall thickness looks light, go with 24" bottom, 16" top. Better than 25,000 lb of stone; I hope you have a strong back. SRW walls aren't a lot better for the back and require more skill to get them right. But there aren't a lot of choices if you live in a cold climate. Down south we get to do poured concrete. Cheaper, faster, strong, and not so much hard labor....See MoreInadvertently out on the cutting edge of garden fashion
Comments (24)What a great color. I think I'm getting into an orange-purple phase and to me that marigold looks perfect. Thanks for the link, I'm always happy to see a new garden 'raised from the grave' and returned to it's former glory. So much nicer than a new walmart opening or subdivision. marigolds are one of the few plants which I actually like more the shorter they get, usually I look down on dumpier dwarfs (pun intended)... except for the big flowered ones, those I like tall. It's a relief to finally be able to move the marigolds out to the front yard again. I did hear they were "out" and shamefully put them away in the vegetable garden and was a little embarrassed for my brother. He has them all out front for everyone to see....See MoreCutting Edge Stencils...Anybody?
Comments (17)ratherbesewing--oh, that's great. Thanks. Of course I see that and think..."Laundry room....add it to the list" I love that pattern, but I'm afraid of overdoing that one since my bathroom has the shower tile in that pattern, the curtains, and now I put one of my mirrors on the wall when you enter the room and I realized it is the same trellis pattern! So, I think I need to reserve the trellis pattern for that room. But I love the look, don't you? I need to go back and see her "how to" post. and Namarie--wow. A ceiling. I would love to do that! Maybe my closet! Maybe not. I don't think I have what it takes to stencil a ceiling. But I never say "never". Did your stencil come with the smaller piece that allows you to get into the corners? They include that now. I think I should order. DH is out of town next week. I need a project....See MoreRevolutionary Gardens
