Need help coordinating area rugs

We are removing wall-to-wall carpeting and adding hardwood to both living room and dining room. The two rooms are separated by a walkway/hallway (without walls) leading to kitchen, also hardwood. Standing in the middle you can see both the dining room and the living room floors. I would like to have some type of Persian/oriental carpet in both. Is there a protocol for this? I think they should be the same type of pattern, but not identical. The colors should be on the same palette as well. Or is it better to have one room be a solid and the other a pattern? Is it OK for them to be identical? Guidance much appreciated! Thanks.

I think your first idea is best; Persian carpets which are similar but not identical would look great. I have had two Persian carpets in my dining room and living room for too many years to say but they still look good, with a professional cleaning occasionally .

You guys are killing me! And thanks for the compliments, I'm going to soarly miss this house. The picture of the rug makes it look much nicer than it is. It really is ratty and I just have a mind to get rid of it. I found a bunch of pictures on Houzz showing hallways with matching rugs. I really like the look and think it would work well for this area. However, I'll sit on the idea awhile longer and see how I feel. Aktillery & Suzieque, I purchased the living room rug at auction. Those are gorgeous and complement each other well, even though they are quite different. I can't tell you why, but I think the first one would make a beautiful runner, with the dining room being the stand alone.

This is so much easier when you provide us with all the naturally coordinating fabrics so that we know we're in your price range. https://www.fabric.com/find?brands-and-designers=magnolia-home-fashions&colorfamily=blue-and-white I would have started with a rug first, but now that you have your draperies being fabricated, I would select #4 for the seats on your chairs. I wouldn't place an area rug on top of that thick carpet. I would recommend the carpet be replaced with hardsurface flooring and then an area rug selected. Since your fabric design is a batik style, I would two tone your wall paint. Here are some computer generated paint colors that coordinate with the fabric.

Two different Persian rugs could look great, and gives you a more interesting collected look than trying to match them exactly. Choose rugs that have the same colors, but in different proportions for each room. Or, choose rugs that have the same colors but in different patterns. A good rug store can help you choose them both together. This example shows four different rugs that work together due to similar colors and style, but they have different designs and proportions of color.
