Oenothera Triluba - wow! I had no idea
Comments (9)now hubby and I sit out there every night with our coffee, staring FOREVER at this thing so as not to miss it, lol. Pam, it sounds like you have a very exciting life, lol! Actually, it sounds very relaxing, especially if accompanied by an adult beverage. ;) Just googled O. triloba and WOW, really pretty flowers, but boy is that foliage weedy-looking. I started O. macrocarpa from seed several years ago and have mature plants now. The flowers bloom in the spring and look similar, probably larger, and quite lovely. But again the foliage is a little weedy and looks ratty now. And do I dare start O. speciosa from seed? Gorgeous flowers, but supposed to be a rampant spreader....See MoreI had no idea there was this much to know about daylilies!
Comments (30)Thank each & every one of you! I can't thank you enough for all your help! You have given me goose pimples with all of your kindness & how much time you took in explaining these things to me as well as all of those fabulous resources! I have a lot of reading ahead of me! If all daylily people are as kind as you all, you bet I'm joining every one of those societies! I have been following this forum pretty much all summer & it is definitely the fastest moving forum on GW, so much so I have a hard time keeping up. I was kind of intimidated at 1st to post these ?'s here & that is why you have given me the goose pimples...all of you taking the time to help me out! So far I purchased this year what are labeled as "Trophywinners" from a local nursery. Here is what I have so far: Siloam Amazing Grace - I saw this at a local nursery, came home to look it up on the net & fell in love with it. Went back & couldn't find it. I thought I was losing my mind or dreamt it or whatever. A month later I go back to get another plant (not a daylily) lo & behold what do I see? I picked the bloom out in dozens of daylilies there! This one was a must have for me: ="" At the same time I saw Spiritual Corridor & really liked that 1 too. I came home, looked it up & went back to buy that 1 as well: ="a href="http://s279.photobucket.com/albums/kk147/tolalaland/?action=view&current=July9006.jpg" target="_blank">" Chesapeake Crablegs I bought straight from the picture. Never saw it in bloom until I had it home. I can't get a good pic of it, but man is it pretty to me! It is a lot more coral in person: ="a href="http://s279.photobucket.com/albums/kk147/tolalaland/?action=view&current=June28082.jpg" target="_blank">" Easy Ned was a Monrovia product I saw at a different nursery. Thinking it was a Monrovia product, how could I go wrong? ="" Now, with all the education you folks gave me, I'm off to do some reading & plan to go to a daylily farm tomorrow! Wish me luck! Thanks again everyone!...See MoreI had an idea for filling in around immature giants
Comments (5)NATIVE SOIL INTO POTS IS BEST... oops.. i lost a couple hundred on unpotting after move.. because the interface between pure sand and peat based mix.. caused death .. the sand wicked all the water out of the peat... get a pitchfork... to move things.. loosening the soil .. instead of slicing everything up with a shovel .... as you noted in your last paragraph ... impatiens are a nice filler.. lol .... they roots in water in days .... you can buy a 6 pack early in the season .... and in 6 weeks.. turn it into 4 billion plants under lights ... experimentation is what turns your thumb green .... give all your theories a test.. go for it ... but over time.. i tend to just put them in the ground.. where they belong... and not mess with the pots ... ken...See MoreAlocasia Polly -- should I whack?
Comments (14)Well the jury is still out and will likely be for a while, I imagine. I vacillated back-n-forth on whether to whack or not. Finally, near the beginning of August I couldn't take it anymore and whacked it. (I was quite surprised how easy it was to cut through ... I was expecting a much tougher, more fibrous stem.) I dusted the cuts with cinnamon and allowed them to callous for a couple days. Then wrapped some damp sphagnum around the lower 1/3 of the upper section of the stem, and enclosed that area with a plastic bag. The bagged portion I then laid across one of the shoplights on my lighted plant stand. (Closest I can come to a heat mat.). The lower section is still in the pot. I've had it outside but we've had an unusual number of cooler days for this time of year which -- while very welcomed from a personal comfort point of view -- has no doubt been unbeneficial from the stump's viewpoint. Hopefully, both sections will make it. But if they both die, then I'll simply stay on the lookout for another cheap one....See Morenicholsworth Z6 Indianapolis
