Questions about Ikea Malm furniture

Ikea's Malm line is so popular, I thought perhaps someone could help with some questions we have:

1. How far do the drawers extend from the dressers/nightstands, whose footprint depth is 18 7/8 inches? That is, what is the measurement from the wall to the front of the drawer when it's fully extended?

2. Why is the Malm bed called a "bed frame, high" on the website? I don't see a "low" version, and the alternative displayed seems to simply be the lift-up storage bed. Was there a lower version of the Malm bed frame at some previous time, so there is now a need to distinguish the most recent product, or something?

3. Has anyone found a finish for actual wood (fir, pine, etc.) that color "matches" the current black-brown stain finish on the ash veneer products, color and texture-wise? Here's two ideas:

Call IKEA.

Ask on the Maven's website.

Why would you come to a third party website when you could go right to the sources?

And question #2. Seriously? Are you just trolling? What possible difference could it make about what might have been in the past? Do you want the bed? Then buy it.

I have that black and white floral. It looked ditzy on the website, but in person it's really nice. Iron -- what is iron? Ha ha! No, I just take them out of the wash, smooth them out, and let them dry. They're tight enough on the cushions that they don't wrinkle. I've never washed the main slipcover, just the cushion covers. If I washed the main cover, I'd iron the corner pleats, but that's it. I keep a towel over the arm of the side of the couch where I sit in order to keep that from getting stained.

The kitchen cabinets are DEFINITELY NOT the same as their other furniture. In fact, it was the fear of having Malm-type dresser drawers for kitchen drawers that had DH saying "No way" to IKEA kitchens. At first. I purchased a kitchen drawer stack to "prove" to him that they were a completely different animal. Once he saw the real thing in real use, he was sold. The drawers have a 1/2" bottom and are very strong and sturdy. It is a Blum Tandembox, after all. Go check them out yourself and see and know you are not limited to the IKEA door styles. Any custom door company can make doors for the cabinets. They only need the measurements. I love my IKEA cabs!

I am in much the same position as the person you are working with, Bee. I really need to do something about my sofa ad while I'd love to buy The Perfect Sofa TM, my experience tells me that 1. It takes me *forever* to find the sofa I like and 2. I can't afford the sofa I want just now. Like others, I have tested the Ektorp and found it very uncomfortable for an evening of laptopping and tv watching. I had a great experience with my last Macy's sofa (under $1000) but they've changed brands and I just don't care for what they currently have to offer (though I am tempted by the Martha Stewart velvet chesterfield-- but that's a very different look than you are going for). I'll say this-- I am far from an "everything in its place" person and I like a comfy, lived-in look but I just don't think I could live with the rumpled seat backs and wrinkled slipcovers (steam them? maybe but not likely.. iron? never). For the Cote de Texas look perhaps you could lean in a different direction-- a linen or velvet upholstery on a more casual style. I am seriously considering reupholstering my roll arm leather sofa in a flax linen-- not for the Cote de Texas look but I think it could surely go that direction. I also so a more refined slipcovered sofa recently-- not sure where it was (darn it).. maybe Williams-Sonoma? Maybe Bob Williams? I'd still be wary but it might be worth looking into. I saw some interesting JCP furniture online-- but this board sent huge warnings out when I was considering a chair there 5 yr ago so I've just not seriously looked there since. Is there a showroom anywhere near here? There used to be a very small one in Lancaster but I think they shut it down. This area is HORRIBLE for upholstered furniture IMO. I've shopped them all-- Gerharts (or whatever it is called.. near Ashcombes and Country Market), David's downtown, Whitco in Linglestown, Wolfs, VCF, Bonton.. everything is so uninspired to me. Heavy on run-of-the-mill traditional or cheap contemporary.

We got an estimate for built-in bookcases in our living room recently - $8K. I found Billy bookcases available in the color (white, which is really off-white), height, and combined width that they fill the same space almost perfectly. $220! We just got them this past weekend. No, they do not look as good as built-ins would in our old house, but they provide us with the shelf space we need while we save some pennies for the real thing someday. Or not, if we wind up moving first. Also, I had a slight hesitation about built-ins for resale purposes because the room is somewhat narrow and a future owner might want to arrange furniture differently than us, and built-ins *could* become a liability. We drove 2 hours each way to pick them up. That's the first time I've been to Ikea in probably 15 years. I don't remember now what the shipping costs were but they were a significant percentage of the cost of the bookcases themselves. Slate had an article about Ikea delivery recently. What is the Maven's website and how would I reach it to ask anything?

Don't have much luck calling Ikea, especially on weekends when a caller can diligently work their way thru the phone maze only to finally reach a recording that says they are too busy, call back later.

For those who really must know.....we already bought the bed. It was from CL, so it is not this year's version, and who knows how old it is. It is too low for the underbed storage bins someone gave us, which seem to be the ones intended for some version of the Malm bed....so yeah, you could call us trolls trying to make sense of the world.

Karenmo - I was on here trying to figure out if the Ikea malm drawers are full extension also. I'd say tatt is the troll. why respond it you can't add anything helpful? I just don't understand people that act that way. Anyway, I got on Ikea's website and there is no way to ask a question and none of the reviewers answered my question either. Let me know if you find out. Thanks.

I finally had a chance to play around with the drawers and the bed. It appears that the drawers go about halfway across the bed so you could have them on both sides. Evidently Ikea made a lower version of the bed at one time so if you buy one used, watch out. It cost us $39 in materials (and a few hours of time) to elevate the "low bed" to accommodate the drawers made for the (current) "high bed"

so bummed. I've just made the exact same mistake purchasing a 'low' version of the MALM bed second hand in hope of having the underbed storage... there is absolutely no way of distinguishing between the old (now discontinued) version and the new 'HIGH' version. So disappointed.

do you mind me asking what you used to raise yours?
