Hows this floor-plan? Brand new fairly large kitchen
Comments (5)Is that island really 4'8" wide. Yikes! No wonder you have too-narrow aisles. Take at 8" off the width giving you a perfectly adequate 4' wide island. Then add 4" to each aisle giving you 48" aisles. Much better! I would then move the fridge down to the end of that counter run, eliminating that pantry cabinet on the end and putting the fridge there instead. And then I'd move the prep sink onto that stretch of counter between fridge and cooktop. This gives you good flow from fridge to prep to cook. I would only use the island for supplemental prep space if more room was needed to spread things out. I would also shorten the length of the island by at least 6". I'd probably take of an entire foot. I would rather have a spacious walkway to alleviate traffic congestion through there and to make your space feel bigger. Crowded aisles make even a bigger kitchen feel small....See Morelatest kitchen floor plan-thoughts?
Comments (6)The island will be installed. Not on wheels. I plan to use it for prep space and rolling dough for pies. Not sure I can put it on wheels-it would be pretty big and has legs at the corners. I am actually fine with the working aisle width. I have experienced the same aisle space on my friends kitchen and it bothers me not in the least. In the design showroom they had a 42" aisle on a kitchen display-and it felt too large to me! Go figure....See MoreThoughts on my kitchen & pantry floor plan?
Comments (20)1) Does the dish drawer open towards the dishwasher? I like the idea of the work flow, but how will the island look having drawers/cabinets on adjacent sides? I'm having a hard time visualizing that. The dish drawer opens toward the DW--sorry, I usually use arrows, but forgot. The side of the cabinet facing the great room would have a panel. If the island is 8' wide, there would be enough space for three seats (24" per seat) along the back. Similar to these, but with drawers: 2) Is my kitchen really big enough for 2 sinks? How big is the typical prep sink? To be honest, I always thought they were luxury items. The size of the kitchen has less to do with it than the number of cooks, and layout of the appliances. A kitchen with an island is a perfect place for a prep sink--the cook/prepper can face the living areas while prepping (and if you have kids sitting at the island, face them, rather than facing a wall, with your back to the kids.) It also gives you extra spaces for prep, when your husband and kids can help, or room for helpers when you are entertaining. I'd suggest at least an 18" prep sink, although the one I drew looks more like 24". I have a second sink, and it's nice for someone else to be able to use it for prepping or hand-washing when the main sink is in use. I also use it to thaw and rinse meat, since it's smaller and easier to clean, and while my kitchen is not kosher, I like that raw meat doesn't get rinsed in the same sink I use for dishes and sippy cups. I usually post this link for newcomers, too, but forgot: New to Kitchens? Read me first. One other thing--I would not recommend putting a countertop MW on a shelf in an island. Think about bending over to set the timer, and then reaching in to remove the hot food. It might not be so bad for you, but your husband would be uncomfortable. If you don't want a MW on the counter, the only alternative to a MW drawer is one in an upper cabinet, and I like the windows on the back wall the way I drew them. It's more convenient to locate a MW near the fridge, but maybe it could go on a shelf above the DW, on the short wall, since dishes would be kept in the drawers in the island. Comments (28)It's a taste-specific design. Specific thoughts: - Your windows will be great ... though, as other posters have said, that can make indoor climate control difficult. Even with acreage, you'll also need window coverings ... or this place will feel very exposed, especially after dark. - I don't care for the very plain front or the double front doors. At the very least, I'd look into a stoop so guests could shelter from the weather as they wait for you to open the front door. - Where I would like double doors: on the office. Double glass doors lined up with a hallway window ... and also with double doors out to the deck. - In this looooong hall, things are a loooooong way from one another. Things that aren't convenient in such a lengthy house: walking out the door to work and remembering that you've left your phone on your bedside table ... coming home from work and wanting to drop your shoes in the closet ... turning on the hot water in the master and waiting for it to travel from its garage location. Personally, I'd consider making it into a "T" shape ... that is, keep the living areas as you've laid them out, but put the bedrooms onto the top portion of the "T" ... the master pushed towards the back and the secondary bedrooms pushed towards the front. - I'm iffy about a table on that deck ... it's fairly far from the kitchen, and convenience rules where people actually sit down to eat. - I'd look into a pass-through between the garage and the pantry ... it'd cut down on steps with groceries. - I'd flip the laundry and the two secondary bedrooms ... that is, place the laundry nearer the master bedroom. Perhaps you could open a pocket door between the laundry and the master closet. Even if you can't do that, it'll provide more privacy for the master. - I'd go with one nice-sized bathroom to be shared between the two secondary bedrooms instead of two minimal-sized bathrooms. - I agree with the above posters that the closets in the secondary bedrooms are lacking, as is storage throughout the rest of the house. I'd want to line the office with bookshelves /cabinets at the very least....See MoreKristin S
