Jersey tomatoes oh oh oh my!

A neighbor posted on our local "What's Happening" facebook page that she is going over to New Jersey several times a week and buying produce from farmers who she has gotten to know. Then she and her kids put up a stand for two hours a day in front of their house. Tomatoes, yellow and white peaches, bell peppers, zucchini, and corn. We had tomatoes and corn with dinner tonight, and I'm having a tomato sandwich for breakfast tomorrow morning.

Back in California, we got tomatoes and red onions when we went to visit family near Fresno. Sweetest red onions in the world.

But I'll settle for Jersey tomatoes and corn any day. The season is too short to not eat fabulous tomatoes every single day.

And Jersey peaches!!....lots of fabulous veggies out here in Io-way....but nothing like Jersey peaches and Jersey tomatoes.

Mmmm tomatoes. Here in Northern Utah I'm still waiting for them to ripen up. Even my Early Girls aren't early.

So is the problem you're having resolved related to the insane amount of rain we got last year? We have been dealing with water issues as well. In fact, the $6,000 waterproofing project really wasn't the way I wanted to spend my money, LOL. Our house is on a corner lot of a cul-de-sac and the terrain slopes down from the street all the way to the bottom of our street into the woods. Remember that day about a year ago when we got about 5 1/2 inches of rain in one day? That was the beginning of our water problems. For us, the ground underneath the slab portion of our house is so saturated that every time the rain is heavy enough and long enough, we had water breaching a wall in our basement/elevated crawl space on the other side of the slab. Sorry you are having to do all this work now. Your hostas will be OK in the pots and when you get to put them back and make that area beautiful again, it will be very rewarding.

Thanks Jessy! It's nice to be around again. This spring was a little crazier (and not in a good way) than I wanted. Below is the short & sweet as to how spring has been. I probably didn't explain well, the roses were from my father's block and had to be also transported by car to my place...just a 5 min drive. I have close to 200 as well. I don't mind the pruning, just do it over several weeks. But moving old, neglected roses is not much fun!! Last time I shifted one of this size and age was an old Lorraine Lee shrub also 7ft tall. The successful move of this one gave me confidence to tackle these, they don't mind a good hacking!!!! ;) Yes, Briss I breathe a sigh of relief it's over, thank goodness I had help!! Yes on Jersey tomatoes, and yes on the peaches, they are fine enough, but I'll raise you a Michigan peach and a honeycrisp apple! And throw in a Northern Michigan blueberry and we might be tied up.

My DIL says that Jersey blueberries are the best! Of, course, she grew up in the "Blueberry Capital if the World", so she might have a slight bias.

The peaches and nectarines have been spectacular. We picked several pounds the other day and I froze some. Our tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are been very prolific, but our cukes have been so-so. Some years are like that.

I always thought Jersey Corn was the best.... until... eating Fresno State Sweet Corn; it’ll give the Jersey Corn a real run-for-the-money any day.

I wanna give props to NJ though, they don't call it the garden state for nothing. Has some of the best soil in the world, and like my home state of MI, many microclimates and soil types, so they can grow a lot of different crops. Shame so much of it is being lost to suburban sprawl. They don't make farms like that anymore.

I don't know if I have ever tasted a New Jersey tomato or their sweet corn, I am sure they are very good. However here in Indiana we grow tomatoes and sweet corn that are pretty tasty. There is a field planted with sweet corn a half mile from me and lots of tomato fields. The headquarters for Red Gold Tomatoes is not far from me either. I have my own tomatoes in my garden but did not plant sweet corn. Nasty raccoons don't know what is mine and what is theirs.

Hey, they don't call them "Rutgers" tomatoes for nothin'. (One of my favorites to grow here in MI).

Yes, Rutgers tomatoes are what would always be planted in fields because they pretty much ripen at the same time. Now they plant tomatoes like Roma, of course I don't know the name of those.
