Help me with my off-center fireplace
Comments (10)I agree with snookums-get rid of the raised hearth. That might help. Why on earth would a builder do that? Sheesh. We have a center fireplace (chimney is in center of house and not on a wall) and the firebox is not centered in the brick chimney either on the main floor or downstairs. It makes me nuts. I just don't get it. you could also camouflage it some by eliminating that mantle, adding a box in the wall for wood and putting up a mantle above both that is just a shelf type without the side supports....See MoreMy wall mounted faucet is off center!
Comments (31)I get so frustrated with the advice to make do with half a**ed work. No - these are supposed to be professional tradesmen. This is a reno and sometimes it is tough to work around existing structure, but this is when they needed to touch base with you and provide you with options. Original design will be impossible, will cost $x.00 to make happen, special order cabinets to work with the distance, opt for counter mounted faucets. It is your money, your home and your decision. There is no excuse for not placing the plumbing exactly as designed or explaining the issues with you before proceeding to do what they assumed would be okay. I am mid way through a whole home reno and have had a couple of issues where things couldn't be done exactly the way I envisioned, I have an electrical outlet that I wanted to have moved over so it wouldn't require a cutout in the mirror. My electrician explained that it would run a few hundred dollars to move the outlet due to a vent pipe in the wall and something about code violation. I opted for the cutout in the mirror, but it was my choice....See MoreCan I put my bed off center?
Comments (2)You can place your bed anywhere that makes sense to you. It's your room. :) To help you decide, you could play around with your furniture layout on paper which is much easier on the back than moving big pieces around a room. Draw out your room's dimensions on graph paper and cut out your bed, bench and other pieces and see what makes sense to you. Your bed frame is a pretty minimalistic style so I wouldn't see that as a focal point. Sounds as if the view is your focal point. In any case, the idea of a focal point can't drive the decor decisions all the time. It's a fleeting element of life in our interiors....See MoreDiningroom front and center when walking into a new home?
Comments (23)Thanks so much for all of the super constructive and smart feedback. The floorplan is already set in stone (house is 80% complete) but it hadn't occurred to me (dug) just to stop thinking of it as a dining room. haha. The two options I see with the most promise are: - As a study/office. I work from home and was planning to use one of the upstairs bedrooms but this could be a really nice alternative. Wall it off, add some glass doors maybe. Built-ins, warm it up with some texture... - As that welcoming foyer. Maybe add a little half-wall transition / break on either side to seperate the space. Imaging built-ins, a low round wooden table, cosy velvet chairs, pendant lighting. Would be less used perhaps but a really cosy place to read, have a glass of wine away from the TV in the living room - would give it a hotel vibe on entry. Still not sure it's the house for us but thinking about it this way really gives me a different set of ideas altogether....See MoreRelated Professionals
