Tiling Window Sill...help please! What do I do with window trim?
Comments (5)My sink and window set-up are very similar to yours, right down to the window moulding abutting the sides of the cabinets. the only difference is that our sill is much deeper. We have a tall faucet as well. If you're thinking that you need to tile the sill because it will get wet, I can tell you that our sill does not get wet. Don't know why, but it just doesn't. If you want to, you could trim or remove the part of the old sill that sticks out horizontally and use a different piece of painted wood trim applied on its side. By this I mean so its front is flush with the front edge of the moulding on the side of the windows. This is what we did. We have a piece of moulding about 2 inches high and maybe 5/8 inches thick. The side window moulding runs into it. So it's like a frame to the window, but a different profile from the side moulding. It looks like it belongs there. We needed a flat moulding to have room for our faucet. We tiled up to the bottom of the cabinets, and the tile runs into (and stops at) the moulding on the sides and bottom of the window. It looks nice. Sorry I haven't learned how to post pics....See MoreWhat kind of window sills do you have?
Comments (35)When I lived in Europe, all of the houses had marble window sills. Since nearly all of the windows had flowers growing inside on the sill, I always thought that marble was used so that the water from the plants wouldn't rot wood sills. Probably not correct, but it is what I thought. I always wanted marble window sills in my own home after living over there, but have never had them....See MoreHopeless Hallway?
Comments (43)Thank you everyone who contributed to this thread, it really has been so helpful. Christy, looking back at your previous comment I see that I had misread when you first suggested the wardrobe in front of the closet idea (for some reason I was picturing closing off the entire end of the hallway, which I didn't think would work). And I have to admit that for about two seconds after neverbedone suggested the same thing, I thought "nah, that would be crazy" before I realized that it would actually be a very clever and efficient use of otherwise wasted space. When I first began this thread, I had assumed that I might get some good ideas for paint color, a window treatment, a hall runner, and a new piece of storage furniture. Now I have a much more exciting project to think through. But, it's going to take more planning, more money, and more time than I had originally thought. So I'm afraid I won't have any "after" pictures to share any time soon, but great things come to those who wait, right? Thanks again, all. You've given me so many great ideas to think about, which I never would have come up with on my own....See Morewhat color for window sills
