Mothers Day China Cabinet & Buffet
Comments (10)Creek, nice to read you like the hot pink butterflies too! Sometimes when I start decorating, I have second thoughts if the added bling should be there.haha I so hope the new flooring is what I want. Candy, we bought both of our Mothers plates like that one. As it turned out, that was the day our little angel went to be with his Savior. It's sad but after I lost DM I kept it. After 38 years, I can now display it w/o crying my eyes out. My DMIL still has hers hanging in her DR. I agree our group is not as active now days. So wish others who enjoy seeing what we do would comment. I promise I will be back sharing ASAP. We all miss our Dear Karen not being on here daily! She has done so much for our Holiday forum. Jeanne, it's almost a challenge trying to decide what to display in that BIG hutch. As I'm packing I keep telling myself I should keep the same in it all the time. However, that wouldn't be any FUN so that will probably never happen until I can no longer move.LOL I'm so amazed that all of you like the Butterflies so well! Makes me Smie! Nana, I'm never sure if I'm adding the right accent plates to my hutch. So thanks for the comments. Seems like I use those green plates alot on here. Will have to work on changing them up when I get done with the flooring. You are so right! So many memories shared. Makes me think I need to do this for Christmas. I have ornaments from DGM and DM that I could display. I'm sure I have more things too.haha Again, thanks so much ladies for all the sweet comments. I'm off to work now. Comments (37)I like China cabinets - my parents had one and I don't remember it ever looking denuded when they used the good China. Probably because I doubt they ever used all the place settings. My brother got the cabinet when they downsized to an apartment - I didn't have the space. Just as well. Knowing me, I'd fill it... nature abhorring a vacuum and all. I do have a nice corner cabinet which could serve as a small variant of a China cabinet. It is currently in my dining nook (and will move to a corner in my future LR when I move). While I keep China in the bottom unseen half, I display keepsakes like a few Hummel figurines, a hand-painted plate I made years ago, and various other keepsakes behind the upper glass. In other words, no dining China is on display. Just momentos I like that I fear the cats might like - in the wrong way - too....See MoreChina Cabinet?
Comments (60)littlebug, this one is the most similar. It had been refinished when I bought it in the early 1980's, but has the original wavy glass. I think it's a combination of oak and poplar. This one was missing the glass, so I used to copper panels to disguise the TV and DVD player inside. The design punched on the copper matches the hand-tooled designs on the bottom doors. It belonged to my grandmother--you can see the water damage on the legs, from where it was kept on her back porch. I have another, which is almost like the one with the copper panels, but it has glass in the doors, and two drawers instead of one wide drawer. And I have a forth one, which has never been stripped of several layers of chipping paint. It's missing a drawer and both top doors, so I use it in the mudroom, for storage, with a curtain covering the top half....See MoreSelling China, Crystal & Sterling Silver
Comments (41)Formal tableware has lost favor with this generation so 'value' is very much eye of the beholder. I think this has always been true. It's like clothing /shoes, furniture, or so many other things: you pay so much for them new, but if you want to resell them, you're going to get pennies on the dollar. Consumer goods don't "hold value". That's why so many of us frugal people are into "buying used". Nobody wants those things anymore. Disagree. I love my 8-9 sets of china. I enjoy setting a pretty table. When my daughter married, she registered for everyday dishes only ... and she's constantly borrowing from me. I have bought replacements for a few pieces my kids broke at https://www.replacements.com/ I've visited their retail store ... if you're driving down 85 through Greensboro, you'll see lots of signs, and it's a fun visit. They buy-low and sell-high, but you can get pretty much anything you want from them. A consignment shop will not break up the sets. But Replacements.com will. Was just reading that young people have rediscovered dinner parties and the joys of sitting down to a nice table, thanks to Covid lockdowns. It's unfair to stereotype any group of people. The very knowledgeable guy who ran the estate sale for me told me that stereotypic women's type things--think china, silver, crystal, fancy tablecloths etc.--are not at all desirable in today's market because (a) women are much busier than they used to be and are no longer in the situation of having time to entertain their friends with all the fancy stuff and (b) no women have the time to take care of all of the fancier stuff. It's painting with a broad brush, but -- overall -- it's probably true. Add that restaurants are much more common (pre-Covid, at least), and it's easier for friends to "go out to lunch" rather than for one person to host. Environmental shaming! Some people wash by hand because they don’t want to tear out an otherwise useful kitchen to remodel and add a dishwasher. No one on the forum ever talks about the trashing of counters, cabinets, sinks, appliances, etc. when they want to “update”. Not many kitchens these days -- even in apartments -- lack dishwashers. I've brought up the environmental cost of replacing perfectly good countertops, etc. many times on this board....See Morecanamrider07 .
