Need help updating living room
Comments (6)it is a nice mirrored cabinet but if you want it where it is currently, move it away from the fireplace so there is as much wall showing between it and the fireplace as you have on the other side by the wall. centered between the fireplace and the wall. same with the tv console pull it away from the stairway to center the unit on the wall. something twice the width of the TV would work best. measure the space you have to work with and leave about a foot either side of the console. see ho much having something wider helps make the large tv look better? I prefer not to mount the tv on the wall to make it easier the move or change later. decide how high you want the screen and look for a console, that gets it that height. the height on your current console looks good just not wide enough...See MoreLiving Room Needs Update
Comments (9)Two of our neighbors have a plan like this with the living and family rooms joined. They are working from home now and have converted their living room to an office. Another who got tired of the stairs, because of bad knees, made it into a bed and bathroom so they can age in place. I have also seen this space made into a dining room, or a pool table game room. In my opinion, two living rooms next to and open to each other with different formallities doesn't work. Newer home plans have just one big open living space, so the best update would be to repurpose this space to something you will use more. All that said, I have just updated my 28 year old living and dining room which are open to each other . We have several living spaces in our home and they all get used frequently. we have a big family with 3 generations hanging out, and so the grandkids go there, the ladies here the men in another space and so on. All of the spaces are decorated to be comfortable, livable, family and pet friendly. In my old ” formal ” living room I got rid of floral drapes and chairs, had them made in neutral beigh cream tones, put in hardwood floors, painted the walls a beautiful Benjamin Moore color called Natural Wicker, and got rid of some fussy accessories and lamps. I now add in color seasonally with artwork and pillow covers that I enjoy changing out every couple of months. We have some of our home with enameled woodwork, and some stained. It works well here. The kitchen was remodled 4 years ago and we did White Dove cabinets. Then last year I had the powder room updated and added white beadboard, and vanity. Our sun porch always was white and so were the stairway spindles. I like the mix of finishes in our home, so if you want to enamel some you dont have to do it all. I hope some of this is helpful to you…...See MoreNeed paint color suggestions to update living room
Comments (8)I'm a Sherwin-Williams color fan. It took me a good 7 months to sample a variety of tans and beiges for my last house which was a North facing house in Fort Worth. Eventually I chose Softer Tan. I also had travertine flooring and went with it perfectly. I had Dover White for my trim. This new house which is a south facing home in Raleigh we went with Kilim Beige. I'm loving it because it tends to be a little darker but with the abundant sunlight it feels cozy to me. The only way you're going to make this choice is to get all your sample colors and test in every room on several different walls and to continue eliminating them until you have maybe five. Then you get sample pots, which are not real paint because they lack some materials, but they're great samples. I then painted canvases, purchased from Michaels, and then placed them in the rooms on various walls to get an idea of what a larger paint concept would look like. Tip that I forgot- mark your canvases. Lol. This is an iterative process and not one made from online color samples. Houses great for people to give you a direction based on their experiences or use of colors in our own homes but after that it's all about testing....See MoreNeed ideas to update arched alcove shelving for lil living room
Comments (17)How do your parents feel about clearing away the family photos? One way we reduced the number of personal photos is by using a digital picture frame. Ours holds lots of pictures so we can have the funny, meaningful, non-professional pictures scrolling. It brings a smile to my face to glance at the screen and see the grandparents’ Weekend in St Augustine, the hike in Yosemite, Christmases past, first steps, and graduation. We actually have three of these. As far as filling the existing shelves, I prefer to display objects that carry meaning for us. I never just purchase something to fill a space. What things do your parents love? Shelves should reflect the personalities of the people who use the spaces....See More- 4 years ago
