LR floor: high traffic, 2 kids, concrete slab, what do I want?
Comments (5)I have a kitchen that sounds a lot like your living room as far as wear goes. It's the hub of the house, largest & brightest room. The garage door and backyard sliders open into the room. The floor gets the heaviest traffic and toughest use. We're also on a slab. We had a flood over two months ago and are currently without any type of flooring over the concrete slab while we 'negotiate' with our insurance company. I'm in my 50s and hope whatever flooring I choose will be the last flooring I have to put down. I'm sick to death of 28 years of cleaning vinyl. I thought I wanted tile. I decided porcelain was my best bet due to the hardness rating and best durability. Why I don't want tile: I am usually barefoot. The cement is COLD and HARD and my back and hips now hurt if I stand in the kitchen long enough. My 2 year old grandson has fallen twice on the floor--the thud was sickening and he really got hurt. Tile is too hard and cold a surface for me. Same for etched concrete. I considered laminate. Kitchen=moisture and spills. I am a decent housekeeper but not a slave to it. I worry that the traffic will be too tough on the surface or water will lift the seams. I also don't care for the artificial look of it or the sound it makes when walked on with shoes. A weird kind of clicking. After doing a lot of research and shopping around, I'm going with engineered hardwood in a distressed style. It will be warmer and softer under the feet (and grandkid's head and limbs). The distressed style in a matte finish won't taunt me daily to "come clean me . . .I'm not shiney anymore." I've been told a daily Swiffering keeps it mostly happy and presentable. I like that the finish is baked on in the factory and won't need on site finishing. We really can't afford to have the room out of commission for days while it cures. I'll use mats or area rugs at the doorways and sink. That said, I raised two boys in this house with vinyl in the kitchen and carpeting throughout the rest of the rooms. Where there are children, there is cleaning and upkeep and repairs to be done. You're smart to try and minimize your work....See Morewood floors - matte or semi-gloss finish?
Comments (10)Because I live with a gloss in the kitchen and then matte on the rest of the 1st floor, I'd definitely suggest the matte finish. It doesn't take away from the beauty of the wood (we have oak) and it's great with kids. We have very few scratches, or if we do, I can't really see them. The gloss finish on our prefinished floor in the kitchen shows dust/dirt more easily and the gloss is a bit distracting, honestly. It wasn't my first choice for wood in the kitchen but I just couldn't live through on-site sanding/staining by the time the kitchen was almost done. And I couldn't get a matte finish in prefinished at the price I wanted.... Good luck! Wood floors are just beautiful so I'm sure your result will be wonderful no matter which finish you choose....See MoreHow to decide on refrigeration? High versus low end.
Comments (14)To be precise: The boxes of Miele fridges are made in the same factory as BSH (I read that Miele originally built the factory). Their fittings and electronics are separate, so there are some real differences. Acaba, have you read consumer complaints about Miele fridges? I haven't seen them. I did have an issue with my (five year old) Miele freezer, that was partially operator error and partly that it worked too well. I overused the Supercool feature, and had a full freezer (i.e., less air circulation) and I froze the fan and evaporator. Over New Year's. Because it was New Year's Day, I called the appliance store and they sent a tech the next day who was throwing out ideas but didn't know what the problem was. When I called Miele, they sent someone promptly. The issue was resolved by defrosting the freezer. Similarly, when I couldn't figure out how to reset the change the water filter alarm, I called the service desk. They talked me through it on a few separate occasions (I was having trouble making the controls respond), and gave me a more complicated, but easier for me, way, which I now have written in my manual. Hint: If you screw up the routine, close the door and do something else for awhile. The freezer doesn't like being open, and responds best when the door hasn't been open for awhile. When my icemaker quit, the service desk explained how it works, with a pin in the tray to engage the mechanism. Sure enough, when I took out the ice drawer, I found where an errant ice cube (pillbug shape, really) had frozen itself to the back wall and prevented the pin from engaging. I popped out the ice, and everything was back to normal. I don't think I've had even a peep from the fridge. I couldn't figure out the instructions for removing the filters for cleaning, so I called the help desk and they patiently explained what I should be looking for. That's it. These are the 30" columns. This is only one person's experience, but I have found the units to be exceptionally reliable, and when I've needed help, they've been right there, patient, generous and knowledgeable. The help desk has an 800 number. ;)...See MoreWood Floor - Matte or Semi Gloss Finish
Comments (2)Matte can be hard to live with. It often has a hazy look to it that is CHEMICAL in nature. To keep it from being shiny, an additive is put into the finish that, in certain lighting (mornings/evenings) will look hazy. Even on lighter floors, this will happen. And then there are the skin oils that will appear shinier than the finish. Again, at certain times of the day (mornings/evenings) will be highly visible. No amount of sweeping will get rid of them. Only a damp mopping with a degreaser or Windex. And then they come back as soon as someone steps on them with bare feet/stocking feet. Semi-gloss or satin are easier to live with. If you like a bit of gloss (not too much) then the satin is the better option. If you like a goodly amount of shine, then the semi-gloss is your choice....See Moreb r
