Lots of files or a few files?

Lots. Would like to get many photos off an iPad without any changes to quality. Another instance is transferring a few e-books to an iPhone from a Win 10 PC via USB or WiFi (too big for email).

Without itunes, I don't think you can. I ran into the same problem and actually bought a inexpensive laptop where I installed iTunes to just get the photos off the phone.

I didn't want itunes on my larger computer so I used the small laptop. I tried everything including a flash drive that was supposed to do the job but wouldn't work either.

If you don't want to use iTunes, the EaseUS MobiMover may be the easiest way. Alternatively, presuming you have the photos stored on iCloud, you can log in to your iCloud account on your PC, view and select the photos, and download them to the PC in batches. When I do this, I might transfer 100 or so photos in a batch, and they show up as a zip file on my PC. Finally, you can try this:

If both devices have Bluetooth maybe that way. I have alk android and Pcs and I transfer everything by way of Bluetooth between them. If a lot of files I just start it and walk away and come back later. If the PC does not have bluetooth a USB Bluetooth adapter is less than $20. Used that on my old computer and it worked great for transferring files. Mary

Interesting using Bluetooth - but how? Was there an app involved? Or using iTunes?

On that link to laptopmag above - this only works if you have a Mac - there's no 'Allow' pop-up on a PC at least for me.

When I had the USB plug in it came with a disk that had an install program then you just paired your device with the computer. Then you turn on Bluetooth on the mobile device. Select a file on the mobile device and hit send to and pick Bluetooth then a lists comes up and you select PC and it sends the file.

My new computers have Bluetooth built in. You first turn on Bluetooth on each device and pair them. For PC I have to open blue tooth and pick send or receive file. To receive I go to my phone, select the file and pick send to bluetooth and select the PC. Once transferred the PC has you select what folder on the PC you want to send it to. I have transferred files via Bluetooth for quite a few years now, no cords to hassle with. You can find any number of YouTube videos showing how to set this up and transfers the files. The USB devices were less than $20 when I bought them years ago. Mary

My canon camera came with Wi-Fi and I love it. To get them off the camera onto my phone I just hold my phone up to the camera and the cannon app opens up on my phone and shows the photos on the camera and I can select what ones to send to the phone. My Canon video camera does the same. Came in handy when I was traveling in Alaska a few weeks ago as I didn't take a laptop with me. I am loving all this wireless technology. Mary

The popup should occur on the iPad, not the PC.

I don't have an iPad, only an old iPhone 4S to test with but that's what happened (at least the first time) when I plugged it into my Linux PC.

I just now tried with Windows 10. When I plugged the iPhone in, Windows installed a device. After unplugging and plugging back in a time or two I got the "Allow access ..." popup on the iPhone. After I allowed access the iPhone became visible in Windows Explorer and I was able to negotiate into the desired folder.

(I believe it went similarly with my Android phone)

After you plugged your iPad in to your PC did you check File Explorer to see if the iPad was showing up as a listed drive? Sometimes the popups are a little different from what the article describes. However, that approach works for me on both a Win 7 and a Win 10 computer.

Yes and no, that is I checked and iPad didn't show up. Went through the usual driver updates, etc but no luck. Unfortunately the iPad is out of town for a while so can't re-check - just got an iTunes update today but was hoping to avoid iTunes. Something so simple as backing up your photos is way too convoluted </rant>

One thing is try a different cable, you never know. I seldom have problems transferring with Bluetooth. I also use the photobucket app. Auto backs up any photos on my phone after I take them and if I want can go to the .com site on the computer to access. Mary

Mine are backed up in iCloud and it involves nothing other than enabling that once in the Settings on your iPad.

I have a desktop Windows-based pc, as well as an iPad and iPhone. I can transfer photos from the iPad and iPhone to my computer simply by connecting the iPad and/or iPhone to the computer with a USB cord. Well, to clarify, the end that goes into the iPad and iPhone has a Lightning connector, and the end that connects to the computer has a regular USB connector.

Once the device is connected, I get a popup window on my pc saying that a new device has been detected, and asking me what I want to do. I click on the choice to explore files on the device. Then I navigate to the folders with the photos, and do the copy/paste thing (there are several different ways to do that, but you should be familiar with them). I don't do "move" because if anything hiccups (such as a power outage, etc.), I don't want to lose the photos. Once they've been copied to the desired destination, I can delete them from the iPad/iPhone.

Easy peasy.

I used to do it the same away also (and still can) but now I have my photos stored on the cloud which shows up on my PC (Windows 10). One possible glitch with the hard-wired way is that the Lightning connector is "smart", that is there is circuitry built into the plug. (That's why you get a message like "this is not a genuine Apple device" or something like that if you plug a non-apple charger in to your iPhone).

If this doesn't work for you, make sure your charging cable is a genuine Apple cable, like the one which came with your iPhone. Just guessing...

if both devices have Bluetooth turned on, you can easily use Air Drop to make the transfer.

I re-read this thread and realized that I don't know how to transfer files, OTHER THAN PHOTOS, from my iPhone to my computer. For photos, I use the methods mentioned above, either through the Lightning cord plugged into the computer, or using iCloud on my comuter (Windows 10). However, I have a lot of other files on my phone, including music and .gpx files (gps tracks), and I don't think there is any way to transfer these. Any suggestions?

As I mentioned above, I was not able to transfer any photos even from Icloud without Itunes installed. Elmer knows as we talked and he got access to my Win 10 laptop and tried to no avail. The problem with my laptop was Windows wouldn't let me install Itunes so I hit a dead end.

I purchased a new, small Win10 laptop, installed Itunes and I can now transfer my photos from Iphone to that computer. I cannot do it on my older laptop.

I did a lot of research, went to the Apple store who sent me to the Windows store and they blamed each other. So, I decided to buy a new laptop and install Itunes immediately to see if it would work. It did.

No one had an explanation why Itunes would not install on my older machine. If I were you, I would try to install Itunes and get your pictures. Hopefully you won't have to buy a new computer!
