Living room doesnt flow help!!

I own a 1940's classic colonial home and the flow doesn't exist. The living room is on one side of the entrance and dining and kitchen on the other. It feels like my home as two sides. I can't knock down a wall from the living room to get back to the kitchen because the stairs are in the way! The room just feel very disconnected to the house. My dining room is very informal and opens up to the kitchen.

Structurally I don't think there is a way to change the layout. Could I change the (current) dining room to a casual living space with a couch and tv and make the disconnected (current) living room the dining room? This would eliminate a formal living space, which I think is more on trend anyway? How can I resolve this problem? HELP!!
