Hi! We are getting ready to hang our dining room chandelier (finally) and trying to make sure we get the height right! Is there a guideline here? We went with the orbit chandelier

The wall looks great! The general rule of thumb for hanging the chandelier is having the very bottom of the chandelier 30 to 36" inches above your tabletop. With your high ceilings, I'd skew more toward the 36" range. Have the electrician hold it up in that range and they can make an adjustment when you stand back and look at it.

This is 36” above the table which we had to move to install. Hubby is my electrican lol, how does this look? We havent put the crystals on yet

As long as the very bottom of the light is 36" from the table, it should be fine. No crystals hanging lower, right? The table height may be an inch or so higher once it's fully on the rug. The room is looking great!

You have such beautiful moldings and trim that I'd consider leaving the windows bare, especially if this is a side yard view. If it looks out the front of the house, you may want drapes on a rod, mounted just under your crown molding to hang within the alcove. I'd look for white or a natural color that matches your walls.

Choosing artwork for the walls is very personal and subjective, but that is your place to add personality. I would use a large framed mirror over the console with a gold frame and three large colorful pieces of art on the back wall, with deeper colors. Smaller art pieces on the wall with the doorway that we can't see in the photos. Look for art that is meaningful to you in some way, or pieces that you really love.

wow. the chandelier is absolutely stunning. just love it. I would keep window treatment simple and do just blinds that start at the top of the window under the arch, like the pic below, if possible. I can't tell if the window has something to drill into for the blind. if possible. a blind will allow you to see all the trim around tne window. for art, I would start with one very large piece above the console, perhaps a large square piece...

one thought... black and white photography throughout the room. large white mats with black frames, all the same size. i think black and white photography would bring a unique feeling to the room

i like the idea of drapes on a rod, simple, but not sure there is a place to mount it with all of the trim, have to ask hubby that. If not, i would just do a simple shade, probably something plain and neutral?

I'd stick to a rectangular mirror since you have the round light fixture. For the drapes, the rod can be mounted on the drywall to each side of the window, inside the alcove, with extension brackets so it clears the window trim. Imo blinds will block too much light and view unless you did individual roller shades mounted inside the two windows. Do you need light/privacy control or is it just for aesthetics?

yes so i forgot to mention the dining room is in the front of the house and faces the street, so we do need some privacy control!

No, I would mount the rod higher on the drywall, just under the ceiling crown molding, so it includes the arched window as well, like the example photo I posted above. I think that would look more sophisticated. I'd use a rod with flat ends so you can go as wide as the alcove so you have room for the drapes to hang and still clear the window. Sheers with drapes would look great. I'd look for a linen type drape that matches your wall color with white sheers.

I love something like this for curtains from PB - just have to find the right shade. I believe this room is BM Revere Pewter but have to double check.

I'd try the ivory or natural beige color for those drapes, but they look good. Get a rod with a flat end instead of the round finial though, so you can make the rod as long as possible.

How does this rod look? With the flat finials like you mentioned - same one/ similar to the one we used in nursery and were very happy with. Would I want to do the .75" diameter or the 1.25" diamteter? And If I'm doing sheers inside I need to do a double rod again?

I don't see a photo, but as long as it has flat finials it should be fine. I would use the heavier rod, and a double rod if you want sheers.

so this is available on clearence but only in one size - 96"-120" . Our space in the entire alcove from one end of the wall to another is 105" - that means this should work fine?

That seems fine for the length, but I'm not sure if this will work. It doesn't appear that the bracket support sits far enough off the wall so you can clear your window moldings. You may need a design that has separate support brackets that come in different sizes, with a rod. Try Smith and Noble.

Not the CB one based on reviews. The BD one looks good, but the bracket is only 6 3/4 from front to back, which I don't think gives you enough room for the second rod to clear the molding. How far out is your window molding from the wall? You may need a custom bracket/rod with a deeper bracket, or maybe you can find one that attaches to the side walls? I'd have a custom drapery person in your area come to look at the window and give you an estimate for the rod and also drapes. You might be surprised that it's not much more than ordering something online.

i just measured, the window molding (the white arched part) is only 1.5" off of the wall.

The photos make it look much thicker! If you call Ballard Designs they can tell you the dimensions between the back of the bracket and the back rod.

Rod ordered, it's not coming until April so have some time to work on curtains.

Should I be looking at pocket curtains or grommet curtains? Want to order a few swatches from PB. I am assuming 50"x96" for the curtains?

Imo grommet drapes are too casual for that room, and pocket drapes won't function well. I would look for drapes that can hang on rings from the rod. You'll have to measure to be sure the height works.

can you take a pic further back and get the table and chandelier in pics of the two choices... I think I like the darker one to blend in to the wall, but would like to see more of the room. have you gotten any art yet for the room?

that is all one color "oatmeal" just in different lighting. I should have removed the white swatch. I tried to pick a color to blend with the wall, but it is not exact. Nope no art, that is definitely not my thing at all , so i don't even know where to begin looking. I'll attach another photo

I like it and think blending in is the way to go. it seems to have a nice texture.

as for art, i think it could go in a bunch of different directions. one idea I had uptrend was to do a bunch of black and white photos in the same frame and large white mats all the way around the room, kinda like this pic.
could be abstract art or black and white photography. it would bring in some modernness to the room. could start with one very large more colorful piece above the sideboard in subdued colors like art of a calm ocean or landscape. I always like landscapes. could go more traditional with a gallery wall of a mix of art, there is this etsy store below where you can do digital downloads of European countryside images in different sizes. idea below. could be very pretty with your new chandelier and table and sideboard... so, lots of options on direction.

i love this pottery barn bench and it is the longest option. It also comes in gold finish but it's a smaller version of the bench. i think the dark could work because our end tables next to couches are wood with black legs.

I like the ZGallery style better for your house. I wouldn't order the PB one without seeing it in person to check the quality - it can only hold 300 lbs, so two adult males can't both sit down. Have you looked at Ethan Allen? They have a few great options and you can chooose your metal finish and also the fabric or leather. One is 51" long and another is 54". I know their quality is really great.

Also check Overstock.com for better pricing. Just look at reviews carefully to help with quality. This leather one looks great at a great price. Search under benches, and then "modern/contemporary". I think it was 54".

As for length, can you measure the length of that wall it will go on and feasibly mock it up with chairs on each end. Don't know the answer without seeing the wall and mock up.

I like the style of the link you posted, but you would want to keep that bottom shelf empty. I'm wondering if you have artwork on that wall yet? I think that is more important for that space, and depending on what size pieces you find, it may impact the size and number of benches you want to use there. But if you're just looking for quick seating across from your bar area, I think one long one or two shorter ones could work. A benefit of two shorter ones is that you could bring them into other rooms for extra seating if needed.
