Comments (1)I think it is great that you are doing these breeding experiments. Cold hardy citrus probably has a lot of work than can be very successful even with relatively small experiments, as opposed to thousands of seedlings to get a new apple variety for instance....See Morecold hardy citrus

Comments (10)Satsuma is really the only "good-tasting" variety that can be grown in zone 8a. It will not thrive the best there, but it can be grown. Protecting it with a heavy covering of mulch during the winter will definitely help, and a young tree definitely needs to be kept in a pot and brought inside during the winter the first few years until it becomes bigger. You might want to look into trying to create a warmer microclimate. I mean like planting it against a south-facing brick wall. Something else I have read of is using a big pile of freshly decaying compost, which naturally gives off some heat. Two other types of citrus that do well in colder climates are kumquats and yuzu....See MoreI'm breeding new cold-hardy citrus varieties for zone 8
Comments (154)Herman, thanks for the update. It’s great to see fruit already. How large are the Conestoga 026 Segentrange and Poncirus Plus fruit? They look similar to PT…….or are they larger…….photos can be hard to judge. Great to hear 5* Citrumelo has some sweetness. Fruit ripens around Thanksgiving……but the size is clearly larger than PT…….a nice selection. Getting fruit in 3 years is very fast. I gave my brother who lives in Fairfax, VA a seed grown Citrumelo 12 years ago and it still hasn’t bloomed! Keep the updates coming....See Moreponcirusguy6b452xx
