Please provide advise wrong grout color was used on new flooring

The company I contracted with used the wrong grout on the new flooring. The used Frost which is basically strake white. The were supposed to use light almond. I have included a picture of the grout they used next to the floor. Obviously we do not want white grout for the almost 2k square feet covering most of the downstairs including the walkways and kitchen. This was all new flooring installed less than a week ago. The color to be used is in the contract and the floors looked great until they added the wrong grout color. Do I push to pull and replace the flooring or is there another solutioN? Based on the bag it appears this grout has some type of blocker built in so I do not think trying to color will work. Any help is appreciated because this was a huge expense and we want it done right. Thanks.

Thanks for asking doraville! My painter tried another light tan. It was awful but I let him take his turn. For my turn, I chose SW Dried Thyme.....perfecto! If it didn't work, I was going to go through with a professional consultation...... It's a dark-ish green (thanks alabamanicole!), slightly on the cool side, I'd call it a fresh tone. Not warm, not really a cool either IMO. So, the green will go in the kitchen and breakfast nook. The kitchen is separated from the main part of the house by 2 doorways and a big pass-thru. I'm going to get an almost match off-white for the trim in the kitchen and breakfast nook so I don't have any bright white near my cabinets. I'm feeling good about it again. My backsplash material was brought in today and now I'm back to being terrified of tile. What if it looks terrible, ugly, weird? etc. If I could rewind, I'd consult a KD for sure............. If it weren't for this forum and the bath forum, I'd be institutionalized by now! lol.

I think I have to agree with daveho. Overall the floor looks quite good. It looks flat, even in sheen and free of debris/puddles/drips/holidays and such. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that the putty either be removed or painted over with something that would match the floor better. The orbital scratches are unfortunate but in the whole scheme of things, don't amount to a failing grade. Keep in mind that floors are judged from a standing position. Judging by the closeup, the patch could be darker but in the other picture it looks better. Considering the character your floor has, I think that the putty is the only thing I'd recommend addressing. Darkening all or some of the light patched boards might end up making the floor look worse.

Sheila, I can check my Amazon account to find the company's name. While I am sure it is the culprit, this is "virgin" soil (un- landscaped) and similar to Ingrid's in that it is essentially void organic matter, which also is why it is recommended that the soil in planting areas/holes be amended. There was nothing living in my soil visible to the naked eye, and the grubs were isolated to only the beds where this stuff was applied....oh and the one pot that I threw the last bits of it in against even my better judgment. Many people have had great success with worm castings. Honestly, I need to contact the company and complain about the product. It could be a fluke that was contained ...I just do not know, but I would hate to post something "online" that could potentially tarnish the overall reputation of a specific company due to my experience.... if that makes sense? I too wouldn't dare plant anything without amending the soil.. in the hole or planting bed. Now it will be as it always has been, compost... aged manure... etc. Lynn

I think you should try painting the walls a color first because I think that makes a huge impact. We are building a house in a subdivision so color choices are limited. I told our sales lady that I wanted white cabinets. She, and the other salesman, warned me that they had a blue cast to them. They kept trying to talk me into the cream but I want white. They had me go look at a house that had them with the builder’s Dover White walls. The cabinets looked blue! But I had no other options for white so decided to get them anyway hoping wall paint would help. When we went to the design center to officially pick them they didn’t look blue at all. They were the perfect white! I’ve been worried that the sample wasn’t actually the same color and they’d still be blue. Last week my sales lady got me a scrap of trim to take to pick out my granite. No blue! So, my point is, it’s the stupid wall paint that makes them look blue. So I will have to paint my walls so my cabinets look good. Here’s a kitchen we looked at (not our floor plan). The cabinets look like the color from a spray paint can. Their counters don’t help either.

The photo shows now. If they used a different color than was specified in the contract then that’s their mistake. Perhaps someone here can suggest a solution that doesn’t involved pulling up the tile.

Did they do any test samples for you? Were you on site when they started the grout work so you could see the color ?

I’m no pro but we recently redid a bathroom, total gut job, and the tile guy had me look at the grout as he started, just to make sure it looked as I expected.

The grout looked different when seen against my tile compared to the sample, partly because of 5he specific lighting in the bathroom. As he started to grout, we realized that the colr wasn’t an ideal choice ( athough close) and he tweaked the color a bit.

Unfortunately I was traveling. However, we are not talking about a shade off we are talking about white versus Navajo (which is almost dark brown). I have no doubt they no the screwed up. I do not want to accept a half butt solution because they charged us a premium and we should get what we paid for. If any professionals out there are familiar with the product above I would love to hear you remedy (even if it is pull the tile). Thanks in advance.

Just use an epoxy grout colorant. Easy solution.

So even though the grout states it has a built in blocker you think it will absorb the grout colorant? Should it then be sealed? Also the grout line is just 1/8 how would they prevent the colorant from bleeding over onto the tile?

I once painted the grout in a small bathroom. It was tedious, but I wanted the grout a shade darker. It has not faded or stained, and still looks nice a few years later in a high-use bathroom. But....I was on my hands and knees with a tiny little paintbrush, doing a careful job (with a paper towel to wipe up any that got on the tile). It came out nicely, but I cannot imagine doing a bigger room, or more, like that. GreenDesigns, is there a way to do it to a whole floor without painting it on like I did?

Thank you for the comment. The main issue is we are talking about 2k square feet and not the biggest of grout lines.
