hubby weed whacked my young raspberries!
Comments (3)Hi Grullablue- I mow one of my patches to the ground once they go dormant, and many others do too. Even in zone 6b, my best patch has canes which are only 2" at best. You being in zone 5 would likely be seeing even less growth than that. Raspberries in general are as hardy as weeds. It takes a lot to kill them. If you're already seeing a little growth, then I'm sure they'll be fine. (Even if you didnÂt have any growth yet, IÂd still bet theyÂd be fine at this point). If they're an everbearing variety, then you'll get your berries this year. If they're a summer bearing variety, then youÂll get berries next year on the canes that are growing now. Now is a great time to add and Inch or two of nice organic matter (like compost) and theyÂll thank you for it later. Good luck! -Glenn...See MoreHubby 'weeded' the tomato beds!
Comments (7)I about have a heart attack every time I see DH with the Costco sized, jug with sprayer, Round Up. I know he sees my jaw drop - perhaps he giggles - and then I have to watch to see where he's going/what he's spraying. Last spring, I WSed and planted what I'm guessing was a perennial and was awaiting the bloom this year. The plant got taller and taller - maybe 30". All of a sudden, he yanked it. I think he announced "This is a weed", instead of the normal question "Is this a weed?". Then I got the "but it has prickly leaves". Funny thing, I have 2010 WS sprouts coming up now that look the same - prickly leaves!! This year, I can id the sprouts and explain exactly what the prickly leaves are about. Gotta love 'em!!...See Morehubby finally found an interest in the garden!
Comments (7)I just stumbled onto this subject. My DH and I are HUGE Star Wars fans! Even my screen name is from SW. I was watching HGTV one Saturday recently and I swear Paul James said he had a Viburnum that was called "Jedi". Anyone heard of it? Frizzle, if you are still on this forum, how has your husband gotten on with his great idea of a Star Wars garden? My husband's ears perked up when I read him this post. Thanks for any ideas or names/types of plants!...See MoreMy Hubby’s Violet of the Week
Comments (27)Irina, I have seen the same thing happening way too often - people seeing only whether colors/form match what they want, rather than whether a plant can do well in its projected environment - in the world of hostas. I worked in a nursery for a time. Can't tell you how many times people came in asking for hostas to plant in full sun, because their neighbors had some that they liked and that they wanted to imitate. 😳 For sure those plants ended up being totally sun-bleached and gasping. (I saw some hostas planted with southern exposures throughout an entire subdivision on my most recent excursion to an AirBnb in an urban suburb, late August. Sickly, pathetic, and eye-roll-worthy.) I look back on it now and wonder whether maybe those clients who wanted hostas to plant along the south sides of their decks had maybe seen hostas with sunlight on them only when they visited that particular garden, and didn't realize that for the rest of the day, that area had been shaded. Anyway, most often I couldn't convince these determined clients that this was a bad idea. While the nursery got some sales in spite of my subversion (I really did try to redirect toward more suitable perennials), it hurt my heart to see those healthy plants headed toward Sun Hell. Joanne, exactly. Once gifts leave our hands, they should be truly out of our hands. I've found that to be a very freeing principle, in so many ways. Woodsidetrader, very true, sigh. But at least that's on them, then....See Moreperen.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada
